Opti can be installed incorrectly and will run like your describing. Putting the plug wires on wrong will also cause this.

Only one way it will go together, it won't go in wrong unless you jamb it in with the key misaligned to get it incorrect. It's a PITA but if the key on the drive shaft is lined up with the slit in sprocket it slides in easily and sits firmly and flat against the timing cover mounts, no space and no need to force the bolts in. Recheck the wires with a meter if necessary. ref shoebox http://shbox.com/1/93-94_opti.jpg also opti checkout http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#opti_test

Check the plug wire routing and make sure they are on all the way on both ends and that the connectors are snug.

You say the computer from the 97 will let it start and run for a few seconds. Does it run as long with the other one?

Have you scanned it for codes?

It is far easier to incorrectly assemble the splined shaft than has been described. I'd estimate at least 10% of the unvented opti's are installed incorrectly because of this. But this error will not set a code. You need to check the codes to make sure the PCM is seeing the high and low resolution pulse signals from the Opti. If it isn't, it will set and code and will not start.

I put my FIRST opti on wrong TWO TIMES!! It was only about 30-45 degrees off but this was a 1996 style so might be different than your 94.

DO NOT LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO SAY YOU CANNOT PUT AN OPTI IN WRONG! These people actually added 1-2 days of further investigation because of these comments I ignored the possibility that the opti could be installed wrong (can be more than just 180 degrees off too, I think it can be 30-45, 90, 180 off, anything really.

This was on a complete 383 rebuild so I was assuming I put the cam in wrong, anyway with mine installed wrong the opti did not sit completely flat against the timing cover it stuck out probably 1/16th of an inch.. not that much I didnt even notice it and it made it backfire and only kinda sputter fire for a second then stall. I only noticed it not sitting flat after purposly installing it wrong the THIRD time to see how noticable it was.. not very noticable!

On mine no matter what I did to line it up I couldnt cause the viewing angle was messing me up, I ended up using a Black Marker and puting the cam slot straight up then marking the cam chain cover with marker and marking the Opti shaft with marker and made sure they were in right...

After lining it up correctly it fired right up. Amazing!
