I haven't done any transmission work in over a year so I'm pretty rusty.

This is a big thread so I assume your reply is in regard to one of the latest questions:

Cracked band drum?! How can this have happened...

the other day, on my way to work, about half way there, when I noticed it had no 3rd, or 4th gear. I take off, and everything is ok at first. It goes in 1st gear like normal, then shifts to 2nd no problem. Then it goes from 2nd like its going to shift, and it feels like its shifted into nuetral! It also still has reverse.
I'm thinking a pump seal could possibly cause the overheated drum, but not without other noticable symptoms {depending on which seal you are refering to}, and I wouldn't think a pump seal would produce a "no 3rd, or 4th gear" symptom without affecting other hydraulic modes; {which also depend on pump pressure for proper operation}.
Can you explain in detail further?
Thanks

Quote: Dave,

I worked at a shop for 7 years that worked very closely with ATSG, and Sonnax Ind. Many of the products Sonnax sells now were products I helped create. The very first "Super Hold" Sonnax 4th servo prototype was in one of my 4L60E's. The very first Sonnax servo check valve was used in one of my 700's. The owner of the shop is an extremely intelligent man, who I learned alot from. I don't just pull ideas or opinions out of the air. If I have a strong opinion about something, it's because I've tested it.
Hey Frank,
Is it ED Lee possibly??

I began my transmission career at Deltrans. I learned alot of very valuable information from my 7 years there. Deltrans and Ed both strive to be leaders in the transmission field. The shop is equpped with it's own full machine shop and converter shop. If a part we needed didn't exist, we made it. The machine shop allowed us to come up with some incredible ideas and products. The prototype of the Sonnax "dual piston" 4th servo was originally used in one of my 4L60E's. Yes, we had a few "teething" problems...LOL. We spent alot of time proving /disproving what other peoples parts were capable of.
Ed is who taught me to think ahead of the crowd. He's never been comfortable with "following". There's no doubt that I'm where Im at today because of Ed Lee. Everything I learned during my time there has carried over into CPT.

Um...Nope, not the sun shell. I'd bet you're forward clutches are fried so bad that they've "welded" themselves together. This effectively means that your forward clutches are locked on. This will cause no reverse and will cause it to move forward in neutral.
This is most commonly caused by a cracked forward piston.

Where you go from here all depends on your plans for the car. Be careful about those budget rebuilds, though. Our base 4L60E rebuild starts at $700. The price goes up with each "level". Our $1400 "Pro Race" build will take whatever you want to throw at it, and is 9 second proven.
