hey....
my car is in my sig....I have the interior from a junkyard 97 and it only has 2nd gear written on the shifter cover...but I can put it in 1st gear manually...I just can't see the red strip....does this mean I have 3.23's?

First, I just don't get the thread title...but anyway...
Second, moved this to the right tech forum.
Third, did you buy your car used? The 1st gear stop may have been cut allowing it to go into 1st gear, something that they didn't let happen on some cars from the factory.

haha, it's from the movie BABE.....
anyway....my car was a 94 V6 and I bought a wrecked 97 Z28 and then got the dash and shifter cover from a junkyard.....so the tranny and the shift cover are from different cars....there wasn't any modification with the wrecked Z28

Yeah, I know that. I don't see what it has to do with the shift selector on your car.

Some cars had 1st gear locked out, I believe for emissions on V8 cars. Since the gear was locked out, no need to show it on the indicator. Must be V6 transmissions didn't have that lockout, different trans or something.

has nothing to do with what gears you have... i have a 97 that does the same thing if you pull back enough... just has to do with the stop that they put on... your is either cut or not there...
If your rear end is the original one just look at the RPO code(look for gu2 gu3 etc). The best way to be 100% sure is to just take off the diff. cover and look at the gears. Its a good idea to change the fluid anyway.
.................................................. .I do not have the codes because I do not have the doors from the car that all the guts came out of.....my car was a V6.....so all my codes are just going to be 94 V6 codes on the door panel.....second.....the shifter cover that is in my car now was not from my orignal V6 nor was it from the car we took the guts out of....it's just a random piece from a junkyard.....so just because it doesn't have a 1st gear selection on it doesn't mean my tranny had the 1st gear lockout....
I just need to know.....do all the ones with 2.73's have 1st gear lockout? and if so, why would they lock out first gear in a car with 2.73's and not 3.23's? Did all 3.23 cars have a selectable 1st gear from the factory?

Lift your shifter plate up and you will see a blocker going across the selector "nubs" (don't know how else to say it, you'll see what I'm talking about), remove this blocker (break it off) and there you have it, selectable 1st gear.
