I have those "crappy" transmissions in 9 second cars. You should really lok into having the CORRECT transmission rebuilt by someone who knows what they're doing. A TH350 will lose your O/D and lock-up, as well as make the car 60 ft. worse. So, a 350 will make you worse on both ends.
To correctly install a 350 in a 4th gen, you need a $200 + changeover kit from Fitz-All, and then you have to get someone to tear the transmission apart to install the output shaft that comes in the kit. You need this kit to make your speedo, torque arm, driveshaft, and crossmember work...Then, everytime you pass a gas station and see gas at almost $3 a gallon, you'll wish you still had the O/D.

BMR and UMI make a crossmember for the transmission that also relocates your TA. Driveshaft can be reused if you have a 9 inch tailshaft TH350 otherwise you will need a custom length. Stock shifter can be modified to work with the TH350.
Its not so much a crappy trans as its a crapshoot if you get a good one or not. No matter who builds it.
I run a TH400 in a weekend only car and I love it, best thing by far I ever did to the car.
Be sure thats what you want though as Frank is correct about the gas mileage.

I went the TH-400 route....am I excited knowing my car will not smoke my transmission when I launch with 700+ rwhp...am I excited about leaving on my tranny brake at 5000+ rpm, yes.

Now what I am not excited about and I really was not prepared for being I had not driven the car in years was...

I want to shift...not like a stick shift, I mean when I am going down the road at 60 mph @ 3000 rpm, I want to shift.

Unless you are planning on having 9 second car....I would really reconsider getting rid of the stock transmission.

Good luck.

I just bought an 81 Blazer with a TH350, I didn't know it was a 3 speed. It has no downshift when the pedal is mashed, which SUCKS. I'm not takin it above 80 at any time. I could not imagine sticking a 3 speed in Skull-1.
