No 3rd Or Od-

Can Anyone Please Tell Me If They Have Had This Problem. I Just Got This Car, Got On The Interstate And Put The Cruize On, And Everything Was Fine Until I Kicked It Down To Passing Gear And It Sounded Like The Rev Limiter Kicked In So When I Let Off And It Got Back To Speed There Was No 3rd Gear Or Overdrive, Had To Drive Home With Only 1st And 2nd. This Is The 98 Z28 Ls1, With The 4l60-a4 I Think???? We Have Since Taken It To A Trans. Repair To Put It On The Tester And Got No Reading As To Anything Wrong, Is Something Just Stuck Or Broke// Please Help.

Thanks, But From What I Am Hearing, This Trans, Is All Electronic, No Governor, That Was My First Thoughts Until I Did Some Research. I Am Hearing About The Speed Sensors And Solenoids, But I Really Want To Hear From Someone Who Has Had The Problem So I Will Know Where To Look

Well, the 4L60E is just a fully electronic version of the 4L60 (or 700R4) ... anyway, the tranny in our old truck ('89 Chev, 700R4) went out, lost 3rd/4th gear, but 1st/2nd still worked. Simple answer, tranny was cooked. I don't know if your tranny can be saved by a "quick fix" at this point?

How many miles on your car anyway?

It is not the bands, you'll be happy to know (that's a complete rebuild).

Sounds like solenoids to me. If it was a band you would either not have 1st and 3rd, or not have 2nd and 4th.

Solenoids actuate the gear to change. The computer tells 1 of 2 solenoids to either turn on or off. If I remember right this is how it works.

1st gear.........solenoid 1 on
2nd gear.........solenoid 1 off, solenoid 2 on
3rd gear.........solenoid 1 and 2 on
4th (OD).........solenoid 1 and 2 off (fail safe mode)

I am sure that is right. Anywho, something might be up with both the solenoids turning on at the same time. I remember someone else had this same problem in a corvette. Changing them seemed to fix it. But the solenoids might be something to look into.

So you cannot even manually go into 3rd? What about just putting it in OD and letting it switch on its own?

I'd take it apart and do a rebuild if it were mine. At least replace all the soft parts and anything else that's broken or worn out. Not that hard to do yourself or if that isn't your thing not too expensive either. Maybe $600-800. This book is a big help if you want to DIY. http://www.phoenixhardparts.com/inde...WPROD&ProdID=8

The 3-4 clutches are out of it...It's a common problem in the 700's and 4L60E's.

Um...Where'd you get this info? It's not correct.

1st gear is both "A" and "B" ON
2nd has "A" OFF / "B" ON
3rd is both "A" and "B" OFF
4th has "A" ON and "B" OFF

Re: No 3rd Or Od-

It could be as Frank stated, that the 3-4 clutches are gone, or you could have broken the lugs in the input drum that retain the snap ring holding the 3-4 clutches. This does happen once in awhile.
