99 TA - Axle Shaft Installation Issues

Good morning! Been a minute.

Replacing the RR axle shaft in the 99 TA. I believe it's the Torsen (Paddle). I've got the new axleshaft installed with C clip but can't for the life of me get the paddle to fit back in. I've tried rotating the axles, etc. I even tried to fit the paddle back in with the old axle shaft and I still can't get it to fit back in. Is there a trick to these? All the guides I'm seeing are the Auburn LSD - the ones with the pin not the paddle...

THANK YOU.

Have you checked the factory service manual to see if it’s covered there?

Thanks for the response!

"Axle Shaft Replacement
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 39446 ABS Exciter Ring Protector Kit
1. Remove the rear tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and
Wheel Removal and Installation (Wheel Removal)
in Tires and Wheels.
2. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Brake
Rotor Replacement (Rear) in Disc Brakes.
3. Remove the rear axle housing cover. Refer to
Rear Cover and Gasket Replacement.
4. Install a J 39446 onto the speed sensor reluctor
wheel (6) on vehicles that are equipped with
non-traction control axles.
5. Remove the pinion gear shaft lock bolt/screw (5)
from the differential case.
6. Remove the pinion gear shaft from the
differential case.
7. Push the flanged end of the axle shaft into the
rear axle housing (7) in order to access the rear
axle shaft lock.
8. Remove the rear axle shaft lock (1 ).
Important: Do not damage the rear wheel"

Is what's in the manual. But even there, where it says"6. Remove the pinion gear shaft from the differential case." Doesn't seem right. I think that was on the Auburn units. Mine is a Torsen : looks exactly like this "https://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh254/oldmanZ28/DSCN1198AAS.jpg"

The steps I was following (prior to looking in the manual ) was to :
1: remove wheel
2: remove brakes
3: remove cover
4: remove locking bolt in diff
5: slide out flapper(?)
6: push in axle, grab c clip
7: installation is reverse

The "paddle" is also called the thrust block. Here's an instruction for a different rear axle, but may be of interest:

Re: 99 TA - Axle Shaft Installation Issues

Thanks man!

I went a different route. Went to the local pick a part and there was a 2000 Camaro with a GU6 and G80 rear end w/o traction control, literally the same axle I have for $110. Was able to pull it off in a few hours. Hoping it'll work, it looks great.
