Question Rearend Help.

how much would it cost me for a brand new Eaton Posi and new 3.73 gears? what would be the best thing to do. i have 650$ to spend. but i dunno. ive been looking for a new rearend or a used posi for over a month. and its just starting to **** me off. im very impatient. itd be a daily driver so i don't want to high gears. i think 3:73's would be good.. whats a good posi to go with?
how much time would posi and gears knock off on my 1/4 time. i have a limited slip 3:23 right now

If you've already got a "limited slip" rear, you've got a "posi"..... Positraction is just GM's name for a limited slip rear. You could pick up a set of gears and an install kit for $300-350. Cost another couple hundred for a good install.

As far as the cost of a new Eaton, try the vendors like Summit or JEG's, or anyone who advertises in the popular Chevy mags... DTS, Randy's, etc.

This belongs in "Classic Tech" ......

Moving it there

The clutches in the posi unit are worn out or you don't have a posi.

I don't know about first gens, but on my second gen, it's a code that is stamped into the housing itself, no tag or anything like that.

Hard to spot sometimes if there's surface rust and stuff on the axle housing. Can these be decoded like on the second gens?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable in 67-69 can help ya out!!

On the 8.2, the bottom of the housing will be pretty round. The 8.5 has a couple of cast lugs at each side at the bottom of the housing. If the diff is original, it's an 8.2.

    are those the only 2 possibilities. 8.2 or 8.5 ? isn't there also 8.75?

Yes there is a 8.875 but that is the 12 bolt rear. Your car should have the 8.2 if it is orginal the 8.5 started in 1971.Try getting the part number off the ring gear (if they are still visible)GM dealer should be able to tell what rear it is.
