Question Decoding Engines - Source?

Hi,

We are at the Yenko Super Car Reunion in Collinsville right now, looking forward to the show tomorrow. I have heard a lot of guys talking about decoding the engine casting numbers, matching numbers (engine, tranny, etc.), and a lot of other identification items to authenticate a car. Is there a source that would help do this for someone looking for an older, original vehicle?

Thanks,

Z~

Re: Decoding Engines - Source?

mortec.com is the best site for casting numbers/locations. nastyz28.com has a section for vin # locations for 2nd gens, camaros.net is good for 1st gens.

But you have to be very careful cause there are ways to fake these things, even fake build sheets, made to look like old originals. You have to invest a huge amount of time to be able to spot these fakes, but it's necessary if you're going to lay out big money for a collectible. Unless you want to risk taking a bath when you go to resell some day.

There's bunch of books out there. I am not real familair with them 'cause matching numbers don't mean anything to me. But look on Amazon and UI am sure you will find them. I think there is a series called "(insert name of car) By the Numbers"
