And just because toyota's are known for being dependable, it doesn't mean they are going to put the same quality and dependable parts in this CHEAP new affordable brand. NEWS FLASH: Your corolla isn’t going to run forever, it's not a high quality marvel that toyota got its rep for, and it's not going to run forever. It's going to be just like any other $14k car out there. The toyota badge on the grill isn't going to work as some protective barrier for it.

And how come when I go to a Mazda 3 forum it's all about owners ranting about their cars falling apart, but toyotaforums are pretty vacant tech-wise?

And where did the reputation for quality and reliability come from? The sky??
Re: What success looks like
The rep came from a time in the 80's when american cars were a far cry from what they are now and its alot harder to teach the general public something new when the bias media is constantly bashing american cars.

And although the above was a joke, googling for a toyota forum at random, then pulling up the first scion forum produced this:
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/f32
And if you read it, you'll see 2 threads on the first page about a Scion rattling, 1 about one catching on fire, and another about a wheel randomly breaking, causing an accident, so they're not untouchable quality wise.

Both cars wrecked, the latter actually flipped over...

I hate my generation. Our attempt at Woodstock ended up being "Three days of rape, fire and stupid angry music with no political message." As if that isn't enough, most people my age go for stupid, slow cars with oddball styling.

When I had the Pontiac Grand Prix GT (2004) I loved it for the week being, but it was heavy on gas. Then when I priced one I was like "holy sh*t."
Nice car, WEIRD styling, pricey.
But it's not an entry level car. Students and "youth" want entry level cars.
Ones that don't fall apart like typical entry level cars.
Some of you might hate the Scions but they do sell well, I see them everywhere. I saw them in California last year cruisin' around EVERYWHERE. When they just came out people already dropped the XB on big wheels, threw car audio in it and "pimped" it so to speak.

This son, is what success looks like.
Cobalt: 27,000 (vs. 19k Cavaliers)
Caddy car sales doubled (20k vs 10k last year)
1,400 GTOs (vs. 600 last year)
11,000 G6's (vs. 14k Grand am's last yer)
109,000 (!!) Silverados (vs. 51k last year) - that accounts for almost 1/3 of Silverados sold YTD
19,000 Colorados
3,800 H3's
That's only June, pal.
I'll do the math for you, that's 171,200 units sold over 6 models. Heck, the Silverado and Colorado alone doubled your precious Scion sales for the ENTIRE YEAR.

Although sometimes statistics can be wishy washy. For example, Subaru is supposed to be the most reliable car of the year, but apparently the Subaru impreza is #1 on the 2004 Lemon list.

Different strokes, I guess.
However, scion exceeds quality for its price range by far.
Re: What success looks like
What does that have anything to do with the success of a car or not? GM is in trouble. We are already aware of this. I thought this was about how to build and sell a successful car though? Looks like GM has done that already with several new models. Apparently moreso than Scion, at least with General Z's statistics.
