Re: Spy pics: Dodge Challenger Concept Car

I loved the old one and that's pretty damn close.

How many of us wish we could go back in time and order one( a 71 hemi) and then bring it to the present?

I will save my money and get it if it looks like this!

The Charger?? Well, that's ugly. and people want it. Same with the 300c.

But this will get people's blood boiling just like the new Mustang which is sold out usually.

Can't wait for the sept 09 Motor trend artcle comparing the 09 Camaro LSwhatever against the SRT Challenger and the 09 Mustang Mach 1.

Re: Spy pics: Dodge Challenger Concept Car

That Challenger is beautiful and looks true to the concept drawing I saw some time ago. I can only hope the GM concept is as good if not better.

I take everything on here with a grain of salt. Regardless of what a lot of people say who bash a car based on a couple of long distance photos, or complaining about retro, will most likely wet their drawers if that car pulled up next to them at a set of lights. (and will never admit to it in fear of hurting their internet reputation)

There are a select few who would even go as far to change their opinion that they actually like the car now that they've seen it in person. If you're building a car with character and one that represents a large automotive history, how can you give it a distinctive feel and look without incorporating some influencing cues from its past heritage?

It seems if theres any sort of these cues/influences there will be those that scream "retro!! I don't like retro!". And well to be frank, probably most of the public will like it if it does.

Is this Auto Show going to be televised? I'd sure like to catch it if it is.

Oh I don't know, DCX managed to make a new Charger which looks basically nothing like one
Is this Auto Show going to be televised?
A local Detroit station, WXYZ, has a nightly telecast after the news during the week of the glitzy press intros, where they give snippets of all the major concept intros. The last few years they've also hosted them on their web site. Google for it....

The Charger is a nice car, should it have a Charger name? God no. Kinda like when chevy called that little hatchback-4 banger front-wheel-drive compact a Nova in the 80s...

*LOL*...My friend who own's a 1973 Challenger said that Dodge did a similar thing in the early 80's?...He said they had some little car that got the Challenger name put on it...He said they probably had extra Challenger decals laying around and decided to use them...*LOL*...

Re: Spy pics: Dodge Challenger Concept Car

Folks,
I work at a auto parts supplier plant that used to be owned by Chrysler. Many of my co-workers are dyed-in-the-wool Mopar nuts. They would LOVE this car. They love the new Musang and hate the new GTO My prediction is that this Challenger will be hugely successful. It's gonna hit the original muscle car guy's sweet spot.
Personally, I love it. I can't wait to see it in person.

GM better have a Camaro done in the same vein as the Mustang and Challenger if they even want to be considered a player.
And the Challenger should make GM sit up and take notice regarding the GTO, too. If it looks like that yellow rendering that was in Motor Trend, forget it. That car will fail. It either needs to look like the '67 or more preferably (IMHO) the '69.

It was the Charger, a 2.2 Liter, 2-door hatch, turbo 4 banger, actually Shelby made one that was Intercooled and decently fast. The Nova was a "Tercel" I believe, and was slllloooooowwww....
I don't like a 4-door Charger either, nor a 4-door Camaro, if that should ever be considered...they should've at least tried to disguise it like the RX8 did.
I would have named the 4-door a Magnum or Superbee, and the 2-door a Charger/Cuda...Challenger's weren't exactly a high sought after Chrysler model then...340 Cuda's on the other hand were.
That Challenger front end is way too retro for me, in this millinium...but i really like the lines on the rest of it.

If they take(have taken) the same approach to the Camaro as they did the Vette, it should blow the other 2 away!...

(sorry, I didn't see this thread when I posted the link on the other thread...)

If the Camaro is donein the same vein as the Mustang and the Challenger, they lost my sale. Besides, why does everyone keep insisting the GTO was a failure. The 05s have been selling really well. The new Challenger may hit the original muscle car guys sweet spot, but how old is the original muscle car getting now? Will they be around to buy a 6th gen?

Yep

In 1976, Mitsubishi made a coupe version of the Galant Sigma, called the Galant Lambda. In 1978, Mitsubishi changed the name so it was the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo in the US, and the Chrysler Scorpion in Australia

The retro crowd has a point here: Remember that GM is in the business of selling cars - not in the business of making a handful of internet surfers happy.

I personally lean more toward the retro crowd, but for two different reasons:

1) I believe it will sell...retro is still selling well.

2) I don't have much faith in GM's innovative styling. 80% of their new designs look like crap and don't sell...taking a gamble on the Camaro namebrand with a new design isn't something I have much confidence in GM for doing.

Let's ask ourselves this: Given the fact that GM has had styling problems for the last two+ decades, do we really trust them with an all new style? Its not logical to point out the Corvette, Solstice and XLR and say GM is making hits - when cars like the Aztek, Malibu, the entire Buick lineup, Impala and others are still being sold.

For every nice looking GM car, there are 5 cars that look really bad and are worst styled in class. The way I see it, GM has a 1 in 5 chance of styling a good looking car and getting it to market. Concepts do not count - the key words are getting them to market.

So do I feel comfortable with a 1 in 5 chance of GM getting it right with a newly styled Camaro? Heck no. That's why I'll take a retro design - even if only temporary, the retro design makes good sense.

In 1967, it seems like GM was incapable of designing a bad looking car. Now its the reverse - it seems like GM is incapable of designing a good looking car. I say let them use retro for a while, until they figure out how make a nice looking car again. It makes better business sense to me.

I completely disagree with this. Why not look to the Solstice, XLR, and Corvette as examples? I don't think GM will have a problem designing a flashy and great looking halo type car. GM's design problems stem from an issue they seem to have with making normal everyday cars look standout and desireable.

The challenger may be successful. What all 10k of them. About as successful as the cheaper and likely lighter gto.
The original muscle car guys sweet spot is a 40k 2door ? I'm curious how many are in line. Mustang is a different flock of fans. You could crap in a box and they would buy it.

A retro camaro and i'll just laugh. Thats exactly what i want to see in 2010. A 60's stang, 70's challenger, and a 60's camaro.

The next GTO is another car that needs retro about as much as guys need a kick in the teeth. The motortrend rendering is a car mag BS article. Drawn by some goon in art class.
A 69 clone GTO would put me in a IS350 or something new. Give me something new with the same equation of V8 power and fun. Don't let grandpa pen the design GM, please.
