Bottom line is, the market has spoken. Guys know what they want in their pickups. Nissan apparently is not delivering; at least, doesn't deliver nearly well enough to get the loyalists to look elsewhere.
Fear-mongers???

If Nissan hadn't fundamentally changed how it does business it would have filed bankruptcy and probably be gone from the North American market...should GM not make the chagnes it needs to make it will not survive either.

I have; many, many times and if you had bothered to look/read you would already have known that.

Fortune Global 500

See, you're going to have to keep the discussion to your (admittedly low-value) opinions, because every time you make a claim that can have data associated with it, you're wrong.
Do you really not understand that sales revenue does not equal Profit nor does it equal ROI or profitability?

The highest revenue producing business in the world can still loose money and be completely unprofitable; generating revenue and generating profit are related but definitely not the same thing. GM generated a LOT of revenue in 2005 but still lost billions.

2004: "TOKYO – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced record operating profits of 825 billion yen (US $7.29 billion, euro 6.29 billion), up 11.9% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2004. The operating profit margin came to 11.1%, reaffirming Nissan’s position as one of the most profitable automakers in the world. Despite a negative foreign exchange rate outlook, operating profits for fiscal year 2004 are forecast to continue to grow to a new record level."

2005: "TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Nissan Motor Co. (7201.TO), announcing record earnings for its fiscal year ended March 31, disclosed an ambitious new three-year plan that seeks to boost growth while establishing Nissan as one of the world's most financially disciplined car producers.

Nissan said net profit rose 1.7% to Y512.3 billion in the fiscal year, up from Y504 billion a year earlier. Net revenue jumped 15% to Y8.58 trillion as operating profit grew 4.4% to Y861.2 billion. The numbers, which were roughly in line with analysts' expectations, stand in sharp contrast to dismal earnings reports from General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. last week.

For the current fiscal year through March 2006, Nissan said it expects a group net profit of Y517 billion, a group operating profit of Y870 billion and group sales of Y9 trillion.

Nissan maintained an operating margin of 10% for the year. That means that before taxes, Nissan makes 10 cents in profit for every $1 in sales. That number is currently the highest in the automobile industry, even beating its other Japanese competitors. Toyota Motor Corp.'s (7203.TO) profit margins are currently roughly 9% while Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO) weighs in at just under 8%.".
Yes, Toyota and Honda have more revenue (although you need to be careful as to whether you are talking about North America or Asia or world-wide) but they are not more profitable.

Yes, fear-mongers. It's going to take a helluva lot more than a few years of unprofitability to completely shutter the doors of a corporation the size of General Motors. In fact, it has been said that GM was in much MORE of a financial mess in the early 90's....and they're still here.

GM desperately needs to hammer away at their labor costs. Their product will be fine. I simply don't buy the assertion that the only automotive choices this country will eventually have will be either Asian or European.

I believe Nissan is considered the "most profitable" because they make more per car than any other manufacturer. Toyota made the most pure profit, but they build many more vehicles than Nissan. It's all chest-thumping semantics.

Gross Revenue, Gross profit, Net Profit and ROI are not the same things nor is this an issue of profit per vehicle made. Profitability is a function of ROI which is a computation and is not just Gross or Net Profits alone.

I dont' have time to give you a basic accounting class but these terms are not interchangeable nor are they perfectly symmetrical or subject to whim. They are well and specifically defined financial terms.

Nissan is the world’s most profitable car company for the most recent year (which for Nissan ended on March 31, 2006) and every major financial outlet has the same data. that does not mean it made the most total dollars it means that for every dollar it did make, it got to keep more of it than anyone else and all your ranting about it to the contrary isn't going to change that.

Have a nice day.

Profit, is profit. By default it is the bottom line of the income statement. It is net income: the excess of revenues over outlays in a given period of time. It is, if not specified otherwise, a total dollar figure on a company-wide basis, not a per-item basis.

What you might be referring to is profit margin, as a percentage, company-wide, or even average margin on a vehicle by vehicle basis.

Net Income has to be adjusted for different things and is not necessairly "Profit" but when discussing Profit you are talking about $$$ while "profitability" (or ROI) is a percentage that represents how much a company gets to "Keep" out of what it made.

You said "most profitable", not "highest profitability".

Nissan may have had the "highest profitablity" (i.e. percent margin on a per-unit basis), but most assuredly was not the "most profitable" (gross profit).

You are correct that ROI is a percentage... and Nissan very well may have better ROI - heck, it probably does. They've really cheapened their vehicles and done extensive platform sharing to the point where they make quite a bit of money on each vehicle sold, though they seem to be ruining their reputation as a quality Japanese car manufacturer in the process.

But ROI it is NOT synonymous with profitability. It is only a function of profitability - a derivative of it.

Even though you said profit, and not profitability the first go around... profit = profitability = Net income. Profitability can refer to the potential or efficiency, but not ROI specifically. It needs additional wording to mean anything more. They're different words for the same thing in all but the most rare of cases that might deal with units that cannot be identified monetarily.
