*jaw hits floor*

but the door pannel story is hilarious. I would have loved to bash every end of that mustang into a 3x3 inch cube.

Gotta work hard on engineering to get degree... must work for GM... must be part of the Camaro team...must destroy John Colleti.

I'm 1 year closer to that dream . I'll probably end up working for Ford anyway though .

sorry to hear that... my regards to your family.

but if Ford sticks with what they are doing, you might be fine. They seem to leave the chassis engineering to Volvo or Mazda now.

Our entire team would drive Mustangs, Eclipses, and Celicas....and that's important when you're working on a car and want to make "the best."

(yup....would put on a disguise.........)

Constantly reaching for the shifter in a Mustang and shifting my coffee cup/bottle of water/can of soda.....

When we launched the 1998 Mid Cycle, we did a telecast to GM locations around the country.....I was demonstrating the composite door panels on the Camaro...whacked it really hard with a rubber hammer (don't try this at home...you can scratch the paint if you're not careful).....a few people in the audience gasped...(a few screams) and then I did it to the Mustang.

----had to explain to the Proving Grounds WHY they needed to replace a door panel on one of their competitive models fleet........

(another reason why I'm always in GM Jail.......)

lol...yea we kinda figured...heck guys I drive a stang and mt Z.its all cool!
by the way RP..for some reason people always miss the door and hit the METAL REAR 1/4 panel!!! GRRRR

Totally agree about Mustang's shifter placement... IMO, it makes the car undrivable unless you want to smash your knuckles into the dash when shifting into 1,3,or 5.

The hammer story is top notch! You gotta have that on video tape somewhere , right?!?!?!

Yeah, like GM leaves theirs to Holden and Caddy. It's called modular chassis systems, and it is what is making Toyota BILLIONS and has allowed Nissan to basically go from the dungeon to the White House in about 5 years. I have seen your attitude degrade pretty quickly here in just the last couple of weeks, it really is a shame...

ahh since Caddy is a part of GM, yeah. GM is doing the modular chassis, I dont see your point.
And my attitude has degraded? Why, because I dont agree with everyone here? Because I have an opinion? Its a shame that you people keep pushing the same BS over and over. If I didnt look up at the CamaroZ28.com on the header, I would guess that this was a ford site.

My point is that all the manufacturers are doing this. Holden is to GM what Volvo is to Ford. You remember that from SAT, don't you? That was what, about 2 years ago? Your statement was pretty hypocritical.

And as to your comment about this looking like a Ford site, the people of this messageboard respect good products, plain and simple. It is fair to say that 85% of us would rather be gloating and giving appluase to GM instead of Ford. Fact is that there really isn't too much to brag about at GM (as far as the public knows ) And this coming from someone who does A LOT of work for both GM and Ford.

I had an idealized attitude about working in the auto business while I was sitting in (insert generic core mechanical engineering course here) class too. With experience you will grow out if it. In the meantime, try not to be so negative

I love the story, but one point:

It should have been done on national television.

well, yeah, actually I do! Because we telecast it four times live, we video taped hitting the Mustang door so I didn't have to replace FOUR doors......

Anecdote: I was giving a "product walk-around" at a Camaro event in 1998...showing the "new stuff" on the '98 Camaro...and once again, I used the Rubber Hammer routine........

(again, screams and gasps......) (it really DOES make one helluva loud noise....with no damage....)

Later that night, I was doing a Q & A at the Banquet.....and one girl stood up and said something to the effect: "how could you whack a new Camaro with a rubber hammer?!?!?!!? That's just like slapping your Mama!"

(again, please do not try this at home...if there is any dirt or grit on the rubber mallet, you WILL leave a mark.....)

Yes, but my point is that Ford has stopped all engineering of chassis. At least some engineering is done here by GM. Zeta is a morphed Sigma, which is an American and European designed chassis. And my SAT's were 4 years ago.
What? Not to much for GM to brag about? How about over 2 dozen cars in the next 2 years? There is plenty to be proud of from GM. Why not give them praise for what they have done do bring back some market share so that they can make cars like the Camaro. No, we will keep putting it down like everyone else. There is A LOT to brag about from GM. A lot more then there is from Ford. I just keep seeing rebadgs from Ford.
Im not negative, Im postive. Everyone here seems to be negative when it comes to GM products. If its not RWD with a V8 with a Camaro or Trans Am badge, its crap, but I find that to be the norm, so thats only par for the course.
No one here on this board outside of RP wants GM to roll over Ford more then I do. If Ford fell off the map tomorrow, I could give a f. Call me a GM fan boy, biased, whatever. I know what GM has, and its more then what Fords got.

Speaking of the dent-resistant panels... any chance GM is looking at using them again in the near future?

It seems like Saturn is leaning toward getting away from them, and some people here complain about wide body gaps, but I, personally, loved them, and wished they were on the quarter panels as well on my 99 Z28... on a daily driver car, I think they are a great asset!
