Cool! I wonder what the torque rating will be and when and where will the meat be in the powerband. VVT will help, but 5 liters is still a little feathery in torque compared to the 6.2

Very impressive. It looks like the GT is joining the "premium fuel recommended" group.

Curious what the torque is going to be.

Yup, but I suppose the 5.0 will have the same sort of adaptive control system introduced with the Bullitt making the premium fuel a non-issue with the 87 octane crowd.

I wonder how the curb weight will turn out? If Ford can keep weight right around 3600 pounds, there ought to be some entertaining racing between the F5 and the GT.

My prediction however is that for the stop light to stop light gang, the F5 will come out on top by dint of its meatier torque curve.

Sigh... If only Ford would have done an all aluminum version of the 6.2 Boss going into the trucks.

Good work Ford!

412hp from a port-injected 5.0.
More than I expected....

In reference to the "stoplight crowd"....ie...drag racers....mid range torque just doesn't mean much. I want power in the rpm range in which the engine will be operating under full throttle. This means power in the upper half of the operable engine range.

Again....this is for max acceleration. How a car "feels" on the street, or how easy/hard it is to extract that max acceleration is another story. That's not to say that the 5.0 will be optimum....make me 'Lord of the Pony Car', and I'd still choose an LS3 for my 2011 Mustang.

It will be interesting to see the remaining specs....especially peak engine rpm, gearing, weight.

wow 15 years later ford is almost catching up in the power department.

Only interesting thing is they got 412hp out of a 5.0 and chevy's 5.3 is only at 303hp.
If HP/cube was applied should ford ever make a 6.2 it would be brutal.
Luckily it's Ford and having the most powerful engine hasn't been their thing for the last decade and a half so probably not much to worry about there.

No Bob, I really was refering to the guys on the street who are messing around as opposed to the guys who a pretty serious about extracting the full performance out of the car in a controlled environnment.

Its always been my observation that big engines tend to be more accessible in thier performance due to the driving habits of the average guy as oppossed to smaller engines with a high specific output.

I wonder what Ford is doing different that it is getting so much power out of it's gas engines? Their V6 is right there with GM's direct injection, and now they are close to an LS3 (better than an L99) with over a liter less displacement. I can't wait until someone gets into the meat and potatoes and finds out.

More news....

To Ford Mustang fans, 5.0 means a lot, and the new 2011 5.0-liter V8 Mustang will deliver 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, company officials said on Thursday. The information was supposed to be embargoed until Dec. 28, but news leaked out shortly after the announcement in Dearborn, Mich.

The new 5.0-liter Mustang produces 83 hp per liter yet will return 25 mpg, according to Ford marketing boss Jim Farley. The 5.0-liter Mustang’s main competitors are the Chevrolet Camaro SS, rated at 426 hp, and the Dodge Challenger SRT8, which makes 425 hp. Of course, the top-of-the-line Shelby GT500 and its supercharged V8 is rated at 540 hp.

What makes the brand-new V8 engine powering the ’Stang so potent is how engineers were able to allow the engine to breathe. All-new heads sit atop an all-new aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. The wide distance between the heads allows for the intake ports to sit vertically on top of the engine. The engine features four valves per cylinder and twin independent variable valve timing. Tuned exhaust headers eliminate the need for aftermarket headers to let the engine breath better. Inside the engine are a forged-steel full counterweight crankshaft and four-bolt main bearings and high-performance pistons and connecting rods. Peak horsepower is reached at 6,500 rpm.

The new 5.0-liter Mustangs can be fitted with either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual.

The pony car will make its official debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

How can Camaro respond here? I don't know.

This is nothing - wait for the '12 Boss.
