Re: First Look at the Gen V Small Block

The intake is very flat and fits pretty flush within the valley of the engine.

Holy crap, Man. i already said I was not trying to pick on you specifically, just the general craziness regarding RPO codes. The engine is getting a forged crank from the factory and nondular iron main caps instead of cast pieces. i would think these would be higher on the discussion list than RPO codes that are being recycled for the third time, at least.

Re: First Look at the Gen V Small Block

So apparently a new 4.3L DI V6 based on the gen V is on the way as the base motor in the fullsize trucks. It would also be a good match for the midsize trucks. Should be around 300hp and provide the kind of torque that many of the smaller displacement DI V6s are lacking these days.

Media Screw-up:
From 0:40 to 1:47 this "LT1" dyno video actually shows a TT V6. At 3:54 it clearly says 3.6L at the bottom of the test screen. lol

Re: First Look at the Gen V Small Block

Anybody know about computer tuning simplicity or difficulty? I've been hearing that the new engines will have ECU's with 128 bit encryption that will be hard to "crack" and expensive to tune? Is there any truth to this rumor? The lock I heard is very similar to what is in Chrysler's cars, i.e, the Challenger.

That would be.......interesting. Considering up to this point, cylinder deactivation is not available with a manual transmission. Presumably because the engine would be constantly shifting from 8 to 4 cylinders every time you let off to shift and from 4 to 8 every time you got back on the gas (just my guess).

Very difficult the first couple of years. The point being, that people won't be able to change the tune and try to commit warranty fraud if the car breaks. However, technology will always catch and someone will find a way to crack it. Just think about the GT-R, when it first released, it was claimed to be unhackable. Not so much the case today.

Realistically, cylinder deactivation is only really effective (necessary) in high gear. You could set the computer to not activate unless the car is in 6th and only after a slight delay. Tap the clutch and it switches back to 8 cylinders automatically.

I suppose that could work.
Has any manufacturer ever published the reason cylinder deactivation is not offered with a manual transmission?

I would imagine the reason you dont see AFM on a manual tranny is because with a manual it wouldn't take much to feel a buzzy vibrating engine on 4 cylinders unless the load was absolutely miniscule. Not only that, Im sure in the automatic version the torque converter is manipulated so you cant feel the transition between 4 and 8 cylinders.

If you could feel a obvious transition between the two, AFM would be a disaster.

Maybe they have massaged it and it will work with a manual but I sure hope it doesn't come off as anything other than completely smooth.

Re: First Look at the Gen V Small Block

That intake really does look very low. Do you guys think the intake height is as short as it appears, or could the heads be taller than those of the Gen 3/4 engines? If it's significantly shorter overall, it could have some interesting possibilities for what vehicles it would fit into (both from GM and for swaps)

Re: First Look at the Gen V Small Block

Its really that short. The truck based gen V has a more conventional intake.
