in regards to the Mustang/Camaro war, It wasn't a matter of being out gunned, but outnumbered.
Yes, I am a Mustang (and a FoMoCo) fan in general, but ya know what?
I'd LOVE to have a 2002 35th SS (though I prefer the WS6's more exotic styling)
that being said, From my experiences with F bodies (3rd and 4th gens), they really aren't as liveable as the mustang. There were a lot of compromises made in the name of performance, and thats part of what killed their sales. Most buyers really couldn't care less about what their car actually does, as long as it(to quote something I see alot) "makes the right noises, and has the right feel." That's where the mustang won. It had enough power for most, without sacrificing day to day liveability. If you wanted more power, buy a Cobra, simple as that. It sits high enough for most people to feel comfortable, you can see the end of the hood (yes, I know you eventually learn, but it is a bit disconcerting), and the backseat (though, it is a bit smaller in headroom) seems less claustrophobic.
Think of it the Mustang/Camaro war like this. One person has a gun with one bullet, Two people have knives. the gun represents the camaro, and its power. The knives represent one)the lesser, but still there power the Mustang has, and two) It's broader appeal.
The bullet may take one knifer out, but theres nothing to combat the appeal.
Let's hope round 2 (whenever that may finally come about) has some more interesting weaponry.
(wow, violent analogy, but it works
)

Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
Hmmm...Well, this is an odd thread. We have statments that contradict some of the things we thought we knew for sure....
1) The coupe market is shrinking and the need to shed excess 2 door models.
Now we have a flurry of coupes in development/soon to be released...G6, Solstice, Saturn Roadster, Cobalt Coupe, Zeta Coupe, Camaro, Riviera (Buick Zeta), maybe a CTS 'vert coupe, XLR, Corvette, G4??? OK, I'm being liberal here, but what happened??
2) GM cannot afford to make a low production car on it's own platform.
Heck even Solstice is getting sister models. I cannot help but trust this new information, but I thought there was a definite need to share platforms and spread out costs through many vehicle lines.

Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
Thanks to GuionM and Red Planet for some clarity on the issue.
Only thing I am worried about is that the Camaro production number will be very small.....like current GTO production. I would be happy with a 50,000 production run or something to that effect. But it would be cool to see the high sales of the camaro in its past years. But as long as I can get an affordable Camaro with a V8 in LeMans Blue Metallic I will be a happy man.

Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
I'm pretty sure the case was made that the Zeta Chevy coupe-be it Chevelle or Monte Carlo or whatever, could be diverse enough i.e. coupe, 4 door, wagon, awd, etc. to take up the slack for Camaro.
Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
Ok, maybe this was already said, as I didn't have the time to read 9 pages about this.
If they are thinking of calling the new camaro a chevelle......THEN THERE IS NO NEW CAMARO!!!! It just isn't there anymore. Its a chevelle if they call it that.
3 years from now, assuming all this crap happened, can you picture a guy showing his buddies his new car........and saying : "yeah, it says Chevelle on the car, but it really is the new Camaro." Only a moron would buy into that. If Chevy can't get their act together to straighten out this STUPID issue over naming, then they are going to lose a lot of loyal fans. I wouldn't abandon ship, but I would begin to wonder is Ford has a 'Double Agent' in Chevrolet purposefully trying for screw over our great cars.

Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
I just wanna ask something Guion. What happened to the Camaro needing to be a high volume car with alot of models/engines? It should compete with the M*stang on every level, even sales. What happened to it being volume? Why does it look like the "Chevelle" it going to be the volume car now?
Re: Dec. issue PHR - "New Camaro" may be called "Chevelle"?
I don't think Camaro will make it for its 40th Anniversary, I will be really surprized if it does. I think '08 model will be the earliest we will see it, or possibly in '07 as a '08 model.
I think Camaro would compete very well as a mass produced performance coupe (100k a year) if it recieved the right backing from GM. It would need to get updates (restyling) at least every 3-4 years, none of this 5-10 year expanses anymore with nothing but different looking taillights and newer styled wheels. If Camaro going to compete with Mustang and Charger (or whatever DCX comes up with), Camaro has to get updates often.

It might not be too late to get your thoughts to GM about this.

I did and received a response from Chevrolet this morning. If enough of us do it, who knows, it may have an effect

Just asking, because this is the first time I can remember you talking Chevelle...
Back during that time frame, I had heard a few things about the nameplate from my very limited sources, but you very strongly dismissed the idea (not that that upset me or anything... just curious)

If it looks ANYTHING like the C&G Skunkworks Chevelle it will be a HOT item on the market.
