I truly feel for ya AL.Competition for the Mustang would be a good thing for all.Hopefully chevy is just playing coy till they have something to spring on y'all.
Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."
That is very disheartening...
Someone already mentioned the SRT neon is better on performance than the Cobalt SS, and the new Monte should be a mild step up... but eugh..

Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."
It would have been simplier to say that Chevy has something in the pipeline with improved packaging which will be very competative with Mustang in price and style, but will exceed Mustang in ride quality and handling with standard irs, a lower curb weight and greater structural rigidity.
No one interested in v8 performance wants to hear about fwd. Many people who read that magazine may have no idea there is a new rwd chevy on its way, and they wouldnt learn that from his statement.

Guys, the man's just trying to sell Chevrolets. That's his job. What is he going to say, "Oh, we're really boned now. We have nothing to compete with the mustang." ? He'd be fired in a second. I know it's interesting to see some relevant news about the Camaro every now and then but I personally don't think this is it.
Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."
Sometimes the best thing it say, is not say anything at all....
You dont pair these 2 cars against the Mustang, sorry. If he wants to sell Chevy's, sell them on there own merit as a Super Sport Compact, and a FWD muscle coupe, but dont say they are all that Chevy has to put against the Mustang.

Speechless....totally speechless. Wasn't it nice when Chevy had a sack? Like the 3rd Gen Camaro vs. Fox Mustang shootouts where Chevy reps openly proclaimed the Mustang as "the best Fairmont yet." Today we're listening to babble about 2 FWD people-haulers covering the market for a true pony car. Today we're getting a Cobalt SS that won't touch the HiPo Neon that debuted over a year ago. Today we get a $40,000 Silverado SS that (yet again) won't touch the now-defunct Lightning in performance or price....where is the sack Chevy?

And even then why would they pay 23k for the slower Cobalt SS when the SRT-4 is out there? If you say looks it wouldn't be that much to think a person would shell out the extra 2 grand and get a "striped down" GT. But if that's GMs marketing strategy with this car i.e. attempting to steal sales away from the base model Mustang with the SS Cobalt I think they are first off missing who the target buyer for the base model Mustang is(women who are putting style over substance in the first place and likely wouldn't look at a musclebound Cobalt even with a sideways glance. Secondly they are missing the fact something as cheap and faster and with more street credit is already on the market and even that isn't going to put much of if any dent in the sales of the Mustang GT.
Nope Chevy still doesn't have anything to address the Mustang. They are hitting all around it but not right at it like they should. But then again it's not just them. I'm still ticked at DCx for not having a hemi powered pony car out by now.

As I do like the idea of a V8 FWD Monte, and I LOVE the Cobalt SS...they are neither a Camaro by any streatch of the imagination.
They might take up certain segments, as in 300hp V8 coupe, or the V6/4cy SC combo...but I dont think that Mr.Ford is shaking in his boots.
He would with a Camaro....
And to think this guy used to run the show....Please...I just ate.

Again, look at this from the non-enthusiast's point of view.
Base Mustangs are selling to 1st time and low budget male car buyers who want something with 2 doors, is sporty, and can be personalized. They are also selling to women who want a sporty 1st time car. That's exactly where the Cobalt coupe and SS is.
Of course hard core performance guys are going for the RWD Mustang GT because it's the only game in town. But most of today's younger drivers cut their teeth on FWD Hondas, Toyotas, and Mitsubishis. The RWD Mustang has the "street cred" of this group because it has an aftermarket as good as any import. If GM lives up to it's boasts, so will Cobalt.
For the immediate future, Cobalt SS will be the only real FWD small performance coupe in the US. Sure you can get an SRT-4, an Evo, or a WRX. But if you want a small 2 door (far cooler than a sedan), besides Mustang and Cobalt, what is there?
Does Cobalt completely cover the Mustang? H*LL NO!
Can the Cobalt SS bleed off a few Mustang buyers? If the Grand Am coupe did, then most definately so will the Cobalt SS.
Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."
But the question is will it do it enough to warrant calling it a "Mustang competitor". If I was a buyer(even one not interested in performance) and I walked onto a Chevy lot and said I'm looking at Mustangs and the saleperson pointed me to a freakin Cobalt I'd laugh in their face. Hey I might be wrong. The SS Cobalt MIGHT do the job but I just don't see it because even though it's the top of the line it'll still be nothing more than a Cobalt in the eyes of a person not interested in performance. And the Monte Carlo...I don't think it has remotely the appeal of either of those cars.

Guy, I understand the non-performance aspect. But we arent talking about Camry's vs Malibus here. We are talking about performance cars, and neither of these have what it takes to take on the Mustang. It NEEDS to be about performance and image, and the Cobalt is too new to have an image, and most people probably think its a new Cavi, and the Monte's image is not much to hold on too outside of NASCAR.
The Mustang is a Mustang, and has an image of a personal performance coupe. Only coupe that fits that discription is Camaro, from GM anyway.
