"Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."

Who’s afraid of Mustang?

Ford's new Mustang may be getting rave reviews, but a key competitor says it isn't worried. Chevrolet marketing director Jim Campbell says the bow-tie division can cover that segment with the four-cylinder, supercharged Cobalt SS and Monte Carlo. "The Monte Carlo is capturing part of that market," Campbell says, pointing out the coupe's success on the NASCAR circuit.
umm NO.. I'm sorry but the Cobalt and the Monte are not in the same class and to truly compete you need a nice V8 RWD 2+2 coupe..

Quite honestly... I am embarassed that quotes like that come from Chevrolet.

Better off not saying anything at all.

All this does is anger people or make them laugh at you.

I think Monte Carlo is a nice car, and I think Cobalt will be great... but..... c'mon!

Perhaps we can email Mr. Campbell or the marketing department and express out extreme disagreement with this ludicrous statement somehow?

Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."

So because Chevy makes other 2 door cars they have it covered?

Someone should let Chevy know that it isn't the 2 doors that the enthusists love it is the RWD and V8. Granted the Monte will have a V8 for '06 it will still be missing RWD and the Manual tranny that would stop me from cross shopping the two cars. Cobalt SS is awesome but is just in a entirly different segment.

It is like Saturn saying they are not affraid of the new Ford Super Duty because they have the VUE and that is also technically a truck.

Someone get and post this jerks email

Thumbs down Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."

More signs that there are a legion of folks at GM who are so out of touch with reality it's scary.....

Hell, I heard there were some the in room when a code name for the 5th gen was being discussed that didn't get it when the name "Panther" was suggested.......no wonder they're so far behind the curve these days.....

You know, I am really getting tired of stuff like this.

I think I am a pretty patient person, and I am VERY loyal to GM (never bought anything else)...

But, it's CRAP like this that just makes me not want to care anymore...

I feel the same way... but you know, as much as I admire Mr. Lutz... he has dropped siimilar or worse lines, even if they were perhaps tongue-in-cheek... like the "Maybe you'll see a new Camaro... in 30 years". I know he was referencing the fact that GTO came back after 30 years, but it's just a kick in the stones to a lot of us.

If only there were more people with Scott Settlemire's views and attitudes.

Well, yeah Lutz can say things like that... but this guy has the marbles to put the FWD Monte Carlo and Cobalt SS against the always popular Mustang! THAT is what pisses me off. How can you say something like that? If Lutz is a true car guy, and he heard some ahole spew a comment about a FWD car keeping up with a icon like the Mustang, he would be gone.

Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."

I think they say stuff like that so that the company appears confident, even if he knows internally that they are studying a comeback of the Camaro or whatever. What is he supposed to say? "Yeah, you guys got us. The Mustang owns, and GM has nothing, so we'll just write off the potential performance coupe customers." Remember, he is the head of MARKETING for Chevrolet, and I don't think it would be good for business to just basically concede the market verbally.

I agree that the statement in and of itself is pretty ridiculous. He should have said something like, "Yes, the new Mustang is a formidible competitor. We are studying different options for the future of coupes at Chevrolet. In the meantime, we have the excellent new Cobalt SS coupe and the upgraded Monte Carlo coming soon which should help satisfy many in the market for a fast, sporty coupe."

Heck, for all we know, he did say it more like that, but only parts of his quote were actually printed.

I think most people (including this guy) really know that a Cobalt and a Monte Carlo are NOT competitors to the new Mustang. Even if he thinks that fwd is fine and we should all swallow up the Monte and Cobalt, his job is to know the target market, and they know full well that many in the target market think Camaro when they think Mustang. (Of course, he also knows that many in the target market chose NOT to buy the real Mustang competitors when they WERE rwd with big V8s - including the new GTO).

Re: "Chevy isn't afraid of Mustang....."

At least I can give Lutz the benefit of the doubt since his quotes were made when the St. Therese/Quebec/Camaro build rights were still an issue.

IMO this statement and maybe some response to it will highlight a certain missing car. It's so painfully obvious that it isn't even funny. It's also pretty bad when it's coming from the Chevy Marketing Director....

In GM there is no acceptable replacement for my car. If I were to purchase a new car it would most likely be a Mustang since the GTO is just out of my price range.

Monte Carlo....

Exciting? I don't get some of you guys. In the '90s we had, what, 3 exciting cars? The 'Vette, and the Camaro/Firebird... Now we've lost the Camaro/Firebird but gained a better Vette, the GTO, Ion RL, Cobalt SS, Cadillac CTS-V (not to mention the regular CTS which is an enthusiast-oriented car, like a BMW is), the upcoming Solstice and Sky, the XLR, Caddy going nearly-all rear drive... The cars are better and the exciting cars are more numerous. Granted, I too lament the passing of the F-cars (but look forward to Zeta and whatever it brings). And I realize that a new Solstice or XLR does not fill the gap that was left in the area that many F-body lovers care about. But to say that GM's overall lineup is less exciting now than it was when the F-cars were around is a little unfair and untrue.

JMHO.
