If it meant IROC-Z28 , why didn't it say IROC-Z28 on the side sticker?

IROC-Z was an upgrade to the Z28 model, just like the SS was.

The ironic thing is that it follows a VERY VERY similar pattern in that the first few years that IROC-Z was out they were IROC-Z, but were still Z28's, exactly like the early 4th gen SS's were Z28 SS's...

Then the Z28 went away and they became just IROC-Z's... The 4th Gen SS's became just SS's, yet were still technically an option package to the Z28....

To me, at least, it sounds liek the exact same story...

It was referred to as the IROC-Z28 by GM, the side emblems said Z28, the interior emblem said Z28, (even when the regular Z28 left) and it is a Z28!! What was the ordering RPO 88-90 when there was no base Z28?? Guess what.....Z28. It was an add on option to the Z28 and the Z28 name was still kept. If some1 doesn't know the Z in IROC-Z stands for Z28 then I just don't know. A Z28 turned into an SS is a whole different subject. The IROC-Z28 upgrade was something new. The SS was never an add on option to the Z28 that disregarded the name altogether the way the SLP SS did.

I guarrantee you that had the International Race Of Champions still been running Camaros in 1996, the "SS" would have been called "IROC-Z" instead.

Go ahead... flame me!

The original 4th Gen's were called Z28-SS... even though it didn't have a Z28 sticker on it.

SLP even had Z28-SS Floormats for the cars.

Even the very last SS Camaro's were a Z28 with the SS Performance and Appearance Package... so that seems to be as much a Z28 that the IROC-Z's were...

A great point...

Is the 4th Gen SS's were exactly the same, but said IROC-Z on the side instead of SS... I wonder how people would feel (mostly the 3rd genner's ) .

Well, as you have said, the SS is more IROC-like than SS-like. But I probably wouldn't have liked the IROC name on the 4th Gen.

I'd have to ask my friend when he ordered his car (or just chime in, 2K1SunsetSS ) but I believe you had to order a Z28 and then check the 'SS performance/appearance package' box to order an SS....

I wasn't too thrilled with that whole IROC thing back then...to tell you the truth.

It's a pretty silly racing series to name a Camaro after IMO. I almost didn't buy my IROC back then...because of it....and almost got a 5 speed T-Bird Super Coupe instead.

At least they still kept a Z28 emblem on my dashboard.
