Opening a door with shaved handles?
Opening a door with shaved handles?
How does opening a door with shaved handles work? How are you supposed to lock and unlock your car when the lock assemblies gone? How much would that cost?
Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
i dont think the lock..and unlock really matter without the door handles...But the way you usally open them..is they install door poppers...so you press the button..and it pops the door open off the latch. cost..thats another story....
Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
There are many ways of locking and unlocking doors...usually as posted to open a door you use a pop like mechanism.
At a car show once i saw a guy who went as far as having a magnet put in his ring and he would swipe his hand by a certain area in the door and it would unlock the door, then he pressed the unlock button on a remote and an actuator opened the door enough for him to get it open the rest of the way.
If you ever watch "Triple X" when he gets those 10 cars (the GTO mainly) the dumbass russian guy tries to open the door and vin diesel just presses his fingers over the buttons that pop the doors open...you'll get the basic idea after seeing it.

Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
I'd like to fabricate something to cover the lower portion of the door handle so it looks smooth. When you want to open the door this piece of aluminum or whatever is hinged and goes in to allow use of the handle.
Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
Best way is to use a solenoid that pops the door via a key fob on your alarm or you can use a keyless entry to make it work. However, I do NOT recommend attempting to shave the door handles on these cars because they never turn out right-the material they use vs. the material the doors are made out of always expands and contracts at different rates, so you "see" the work under the paint. I haven't seen one perfect yet, mine has been redone 3 times and it looks pretty good, but not perfect....

Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
The way mine works is the solenoid has a metal wire which actually unlocks the doors, which happen to be suicide. It works nicely because you can put your arm up through the inner fender and pull the wire if the car is dead, and release the door latch manually. For regular doors it would be a different deal. How I used to have it set up was there was a ground and power wire with a bolt at the end of each under one of the inner fenders, which you could put jumper cables to, and thus power up the door unlatching mechanism/solenoid if the car was dead.

Ok, my opinion is do it-you have steel doors so it will work out much easier, have someone professional do it, they will weld a metal plate over the hole and then bondo and smooth it prior to prime and paint. I am talking about 4th gens and their plastic fantastic doors as to a "no" when shaving doors...

COuld you be anymore correct... I'm getting tired of fixing my doors all the time... plus my solinoid just went out... Still trying to find the right compund to resist the cracking... To much flex and vibrations in these cars cause allot of things to come apart.
To answer the original quesiton you install better door poppers... that push your door out further after it's open. You don't need locks... as the Shaved kit requires elimination of your locking system. All you need are the latches. On a side note... When your close your door it automaticly locks itself... biggiest worries are your remote battery going dead....and a solinoid failing... like mine has done.
Re: Opening a door with shaved handles?
I have actually seen a car that had a switch under the front wheel well that rolled down the window on the driver side and thats how you got in the car....but thats not really a safe way of going about unlock your car. I would be secret about who I show how I got in.
