Never said the LS1 was the end of all motorsports. But for what you get, it's hard to compete

I'm buying a 99 Trans Am here in the next few days. 11 thousand dollars. Where else can you buy a late model car (98 or newer-ish) that has the power the LS1 brings, for 11 thousand dollars? Not to mention how damn SEXY a 4th gen Trans Am is, the 6 speed, all the refinements, and not to mention the pretty good gas mileage. This Trans Am will have better gas mileage than my old Camaro, and it nearly has twice the power. Of course, I would LOVE to have an original engine from the muscle car days. Without a doubt I would take out the 427 from the '69 Stringray L88. Who the hell wouldn't? "435+" horses factory, which usually dyno'd over 500 at the wheels. They did it best in the old days, I will admit that 100%. But for how cars are today, it's hard to compete with an LS1 for the price. Even if price isn't an issue, the LS1 is still a hell of an engine with LOTS of possibilities

they must be playing video games and building paper motors l98's = sleeping at the wheel. like mc hammer said l98's "cant touch this" LT1's forever! i'll run any l98 no matter what mods you have stop singing it and start bringing it

C'mon man, this was just supposed to be a comparison of the two, don't come in here bashing and asking for people to race.

Now, with that aside:

If a 3rd gen can out-handle a 4th, then an L98 should own twisty roads correct? Little less power but better handling = Faster

-Rippin

NOTE: Don't hold me accountable for saying 3rd's out-handle 4th's, just going on what I've been told. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well...I've owned an '88 1LE IROC as well as my current '97 WS6, so I feel like I have a little insight. Since the 3rd and 4th gens share the same rear suspension and the 4th gens have a superior front SLA suspension setup, then it appears to me that the 4th gens would have the upper hand handling wise. And my WS6 weighed in less than my 1LE IROC did, further enhancing the 4th gens advantage.

But in any event, screw handling. LT1s have superior heads vs. L98s and a far better intake manifold, and that is where horsepower starts. Stock to stock, LT1 wins hands down. But since no one stays stock, the sky is the limit for either engine, right? It pretty much always comes down to $$$.

well i have owned an 85 vette with an l98, i have also owned 87 iroc and an 88 with the 5.7 l98, i even owned mustangs 5.0's, let me tell you the truth coming from a guy that have owned several cars, if you compare a stock l98 to an lt1 then there is no contest, in late 80's and early 90's when the mustangs use to race l98 irocs they use to be very close competition, if u got yourself a 5.0 coupe then its almost always a winner vs a stock iroc, but close......since the lt1 came out it put an end to this , a stock 93 with 273's lt1 vs a stock 5.0 mustang was a joke, the lt1 will eat it off the line, quarter mile, highway, you name it....i even got beaten by every lt1 that i raced with my irocs and mustangs, and thats with a few mods.... thats why i own an LT1, so for someone to tell me that an iroc l98 could beat an lt1 stock for stock then this person is on something....i don't believe it, last time i checked the fbody's were only becoming faster not slower with time and technology. i dont even think there is any advantage for the l98 over an lt1 none whatsoever, LT1 is plain jain the better engine overall low end or top end, you wanna go even wilder, get an LS1.
