LT1 4th Gen VS L98 3rd Gen
I'm not here to argue whats better than what
, but Kurt Kraft, you're seriously misinformed about the LS1...
There are tons, and I mean TONS of bolt-on ONLY(stock cam, heads, bottom-end) LS1's in the mid to high 11's. I personally know of several of them up here in northern IL it's sick! Granted most are A4's with big stalls and some weight reduction, but still. In fact, there is this guy local to me who has went a best of 11.4 @ 117.5 in his bolt-on only M6(major weight reduction) and now 10.9 @ 125 with the addition of a huge cam. There is also another high 10 second cam only(stock headed) A4 LS1 running around in Lousiana. Both guys(Sean Mangan & Mike Hoffpauir) are regulars over at LS1tech.com. Go over there and you'll find a never-ending list of these bolt-on 11 second LS1's I speak of. They are like a dime a dozen...
BTW, don't get me wrong, I don't think the LS1 is the end all to engines in this world(not by a long shot), but for all-out drag on motor(especially with stock cubes), it has more than proven it's potential with unbelievable results at the track.

But if ya don't believe me, that's cool. Remember though, most of them have a lot of weight reduction and big stalls(usually at least 4000). And like I said, go over to www.LS1tech.com if ya want to find out for yourself(there are plenty of them over there).
Honestly, I could really care-less what any LS1 does in comparison to an LT1 or L98(both of which I like). I'm just pointing out what they have done in regards to some doubts people may have about them...
Mike:
Not misinformed, just frustrated that people disregard other motors for the LS1. I agree, very well built and an ingenious design. I also find that many of the people who run an LS1 have no clue about thier cars and what to do with them, and that is just bothersome. I MUCH appreciate the fact, though, that you said it wasn't the end all! Thank you!

Still man, i'm NOT trying to attack you, this is a discussion, not a battle. Am i supposed to be impressed that you're 23 and you make assumtions about what people can/can't afford, etc? Man, think logically! I've seen the Cobra at the track. If you think it can't hang with and Ls1, then you've got issues. Yes, the LS6 is STILL faster, but if you READ my post you'll see that i said "can compete with" NOT "beat." C'mon man, if you don't have something worthwhile to contribute, then don't say anything. I'm sorry you cannot accept the fact that a car setup like mine will beat yours. If your so dissapointed, buy another one or build yours up. And if you REALLY know about cars, you'll understand that there is also much to be said about gearing, tires and suspension that also contributes to being able to win besides the motor. If you're such a great and knowledgeable mechanic of 6 years, how can you overlook this?
FireAm94:
I agree, i've never seen an Ls1 car perform like that, but i can kind of see where they are coming from. A "bolt on" could certainly be an LS6 intake, etc. Plus, the heads on an Ls1 are by nature hi-flo. You can do quite a bit before they REALLY restrict the motor's breating abilities. It just depends on what one considers a bolt on.

Yes, very true, but what else could you modify to make an Ls1 get into the 11s with bolt ons? There really aren't any highly effective "bolt ons." What, a lid, filter and a cat-back? Nah... i don't think that'd make 11s.

Throttle Body
Mass Air Sensor
Headers/y-pipe/cat-back
gears
converter(A4)
Panhard rod/lower control arms/torque arm
Drag radials
ECM reprogrammed
A4 cars can get into the 11's easier with a converter. LS1 clutch's don't like to go past mid 12's before burning up.
Its not that hard to get a LS1 into the 11's, especially with a cam change. But you can do it without doing any internal mods. Its been done lots of times, just have to follow the right recipe.
I'll see plenty of them tomorrow at MIR for the 4th gen shootout.
i actually own a 91 z28 LB9 with 700R4 and a 96 formula firebird M6. the firebird will hold its ground on the lowend to a 2001 WS6 that runs low 13.'s. after 70mph the LS1 screams past me though. the 305 in the Z isnt bonestock, has a chip, .450/.480 cam with mild duration numbers on a 112LSA with minor port work on the heads and a rebuilt tranny with aluminum DS on stock 2.73 gears and it stays on the formula's fender up to 115, and this is a 305! we spin the thing to 6500 all the time without problems. now, bonestock the Z was a slow POS that barely hung with stock fox body GT's. stock for stock the TPI cars are slower, why would GM make the 4th gens slower than the 3rd gens? it just wouldnt make sense. however, i do beleive the TPI cars respond much better to mods, expecially headwork. the stock L98 heads, even the aluminum ones from the vette's flow crap compared to stock LT1 castings.

you already stated that the heads are "hi-flo" well logically the more you make that motor inhale, and the better you let those heads exhale, the faster you go. and those are some fine inhale and exhale mods.
This thread is still going?
One more time. No one is hating on the L98s, I owned one for years and I still think the 3rd gen IROCs are one of the best looking camaros ever.
I owned a 350 IROC the difference in performance between it and my LT1 was nite and day. I chose to sell my 3rd gen and buy and mod a 4th gen, if I had waited I would have bought an LS1 but I already have too much work in the LT1 now so I am sticking with it. The L98 is not a bad motor its just not that capable with the TPI setup.

Ok, ok. We all know that except for a few "factory freaks" (and I mean very few) that the Lt1 is faster. As for handling, a friend of mine has a 4th gen and even he admits that the 3rd gen handles better.
Hate to bring this part up but the 3rd gen also looks better. But then I also own one.

to the 3rd gen.
