LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
I agree that the average LT1 is somewhat faster than the average 94/95 Cobra. That doesn't mean that it can't win a drag racer however.
Tanmanksi....you'd be surprised. And some of us have been here a long time because, among other reasons, we've owned our share of F-bodys. Personally, I've had three:
A 74 Formula (yes, that's a very old picture and a very young me)
An 85 Z28
And most recently, a 99 T/A
I have nothing at all against them.

ZeeDub, Cosby, you both need to take it down a notch. I've known ZeeDub for a long time and he is a good guy, just likes to stick to his guns (metaphor only) about his opinions. Cosby, you present valid arguments and I respect that. I just think it turned into a little bit of a pissin match.
Jason, congrats on the kill. You are lucky, I don't have many kills as most mustangs just rev and leave....
A little ribbing each other is fine, just remember this is all for fun, ok?

*Edited a whole lot of bull sh*t out...*
you guys need to fix how that link works, when i hit the link in my email, it takes me to the first message posted after mine, instead of the last in the thread... so i didnt get to see the rest till now...
fact is man, i aint here to bitch, i aint hear to argue about mustangs VS camaros in a "theoretical" manner, as thats a dead game... you got a mustang? i got a camaro, lets run em, and see who wins....
ive totally lost my drive to continue this convo, its gonna go nowhere....
so with that said, im 21 years old, i had a 1979 monte carlo (training day replica) i only put $3500 into it including the price i paid for the car ($400 from the junkyard) i put the $3100 into it, totally rebuilt it, and a guy wanted to trade me..... so he gave my this Z28 and $1200.... so i only payed $2300 if you want to talk cash.... for a 95 Z? im not so sure that deal is going to come around again ANY time soon... so for being as young as i am? i can be proud of the fact that i didnt settle for paying $30k+ for a new muscle car, when i can build this one to beat a modded one for under 10 grand.... does anyone respect the drag strip miser?
i had a 72 nova, with an LT1, fully modded driveline, with energy suspension bushings all the way around, and 4 12" subs on a custom slam board.... high 13s...... i love my old cars, and if it wasnt for a punk in a rice rocket thinkin he had enough space to squeeze between me and another car on the freeway at 110 MPH, when me and the other car were cruising at 70 MPH ...i would still have it....
respect goes both ways man, i had nothing to say against you till you trashed my kill story..... we can scowl eachother for the duration of our time at this forum..... or we can get along and try not to bump heads on dead issues such as the "New car VS old car stock for stock" argument.... its dead... if your car is fast it can beat ANY stock muscle car.... i dont think anything under $30 grand is running 13.5 or lower.... and to me? being fast is 12s and under... 13s are fast, but thats not too much to be proud of in the world of drag racing... thats a good exhaust setup, ECM tune, intake, pulleys, and a shiftkit/short throw shifter..... lets talk cam, heads, intake MANIFOLD, crank, blueprinting, and of course, a proper driveline..... now we are going into the 12/11 second range, and THAT is fast....... Just my frickin humble opinion!

I've drag raced Mustangs for 16 years (longer than most of you in this thread have been alive). It is very rare for them to break 2nd gear. I'll let you Einsteins tell me what part of the T5/T45 they do break.
BTW....why do I point this out? Easy - got credibility?

Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
LOL. I'm off to the NMRA Michigan race this afternoon, so hopefully we can let this one die a slow death.
BTW...fast is relative. What's fast to some is stupid slow to others. For example, my new 04 (bone stock) feels stupid slow compared to my modded 99.
Birchman...I've never broken a shifter, but I have seen people do it. That's not really part of the tranny though, and is very, very easy to fix. T5s like to eat shifter forks (broke plenty of those), syncros, and 3rd gear. T45s are similar, though I've also managed to break input shafts like they were twigs. Really....I broke five (5) T45 input shafts from July through November of 2001. Definition of SUCKS! Unfortunately, at the time, there was not a viable upgrade that met my needs (class racing and street driving...everything is a compromise). Here's a pic taken right after I broke input shaft number 4. Kind of funny now.
Got Input Shaft?
Needless to say, I got VERY good at pulling trannies. Some of my racing buddies got together and gave me a present to fix the problem though...
TOUGH input shaft!
Lightening the mood a bit...

Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
I've never won a race, or beat a mustang much less a Yugo, maybe we should all just buy 5.0s and run circles around the world. Better yet maybe if we tell our cars enough that they can start we can drive around the block without someone on a go-ped pulling us by several car lengths... bah

both the GTO and the Mach 1 are capable of running 13.5 or better and both come in at around $30K.....
and the GTO with the LS2 should best that while staying close to $30K...same for the new "retro" Mustang GT....which will probably be a little less than $30K

If you dont beat on them they can hold up. I made over 100 10 second passes on the same T5.My biggest problem was clutches.I ran a 5 speed up untill '97 and back then there was'nt that many choices in clutches that can hold alot of power at a reasonable price. So I ran a centerforce and got 8-10 passes on slicks before the clutch was blown.

"Actually, the Factory Five Racing Cobra (shelby replica) sells for around $25k I believe. It is a new car with a new VIN. It'll do high 11's stock. "
like he said.... got credibility? show me a local dealership selling that car (regardless of production number, at that price, im sure there SHOULD be ONE around town..) and show me that dealership selling it for under $30k....then i will eat my words... i just dont see any production car for that pricetag running anything lower than a 13.5... unless its a factory freak.... show me consitant runs between several cars in the 11 second range then show me that same car with the same bells and whistles for that price tag.... really, i wanna see this...

Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
Look up Factory Five Racing online. They don't have any LOCAL dealerships......but neither does Aston Martin.....and they are production, and I see them around town occassionally. Also, I have met 3 people in Antioch with Factory Five Cobras. It's like $22k then the cost of whatever motor you want, and the shipping overseas. All under $30k in a production car. Depending on what motor your want, it'll run 13.0-11.0 in the quarter. Just because it is customizeable doesn't mean its not a production car. High end luxury cars can be ordered with hundreds of customizeable options that usually aren't available on lower priced cars....but they still count as normal production.
Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
but i still cease to understand how a car/motor producing the right amount of torque and HP, with the work that would have to be put into that could be done for 25 grand.... it just seems too good to be true... instead of buying a mustang or camaro, why dont people just buy that? hell... its a frickin 11 second dragster FROM THE FACTORY for less than any camaro/bird/stang...... come on now, supply and demand... i just dont see how a $25k pricetag would do a justice to an 11 second factory car.... your talkin about speeds of a viper, or high end european cars...... and for a 25k tag? just seems unreal.... and would be a total slap in the face on anyone who payed more than $15k for a new cobra.... you get what im saying? thats like putting a $20k pricetag on a new viper......... just doesnt make sense...
Re: LT1 lookin shabby, danced on a 5.0
sure it does, the build costs are low. And it is not primarily a drag car, it is a road racing car. The reason not many people have them is there is a long waiting list, as is with most high end sports cars, and they are not very street friendly. They are street legal, but by no means comfortable. The suspension is PURE performance, you feel EVERY bump, very harsh ride. And people don't usually want to deal with shipping overseas.
