I mentioned that I didn't remember about the cam. However, I have a vague recollection that the Vortec heads they used were some recent Scoggin-Dickey reworked units. These not only had the reworked valve guide bosses to fit SBC head type valve seals and springs for tolerating more lift than normal that they've been offering for a while. They also had larger port sizes, 185 instead of the normal 170. I think they also had bigger valves, like 2.00" and 1.55". Can't imagine not having done a project like that without doing a cam as well. Just imagine, the unsuspecting 4th gen ls1 owner receiving your challenge with disdain until he sees you on some significant par with his pace meaning possibly puting some pull on him. Now that's what I'm talkin' about to garner some 3rd gen respect.

Re: L98 vs SRT-4 (Again)

~30k mile 305 w/ vortec heads that were ported, milled, and set up for hydraulic roller valvetrain. used a TBI setup with like a 600 cfm TB. it had a hotcam sized cam as well to make around 275 rwhp and 325 rwtq if i remember right. not real economical if you ask me since the heads were probably 1000, 250 for the cam, 250 fpr TB, plus xxx for new injectors, new gaskets, labor, and xxxx for a new trans because they fried the 700r4 with all that torque.

Re: L98 vs SRT-4 (Again)

well I have priced most fo the stuff, and thus far I am under $2k for all the parts. Which is fine with me. I will install everything myself, but will get the intake and heads done to fit the 1208 gasket or w/e u call it.....lol. I will start buying these items one at a time, starting with the cam/lifters set with roller rockers...I found that for $600 and some change. Then I wil get the heads probably around March, then the HSR in summer. Then I will starting getting the mill work done and all, then put it all on. Or heck maybe buy then I will be rolling and can just pay a racing shop here to put it all together fo rme.....lol. I have to buy my wife a van first, which I am doing in Jan. Once that is done then I can play.

Re: L98 vs SRT-4 (Again)

91TAL98,
I did a similar build with my son (he was 15 when we started) and his 3rd gen RS Camaro. Took an 89 RS v6 auto with a blown motor and dropped in an L98 and did a 6 speed conversion, and a 4th gen rear end swap with the stock 3:42's. Did some port work on the heads and slid in a mild cam, headers, flowmaster, bought a chip burner and some tuning software from Craig Moates, and Painted it Pearl White, added some C5 wheels...
How does it run?
He waxed my other son in a stock LT1 Z A4 with a flowmaster and no cats.
So now that son wants to build up his LT1!!
Gotta love father son projects!

You have to ignore others that probably don't even have a quick car that say stuff like...
"sell that turd and save up for aLT1/LS1"

Good luck on the project!!

Re: L98 vs SRT-4 (Again)

Thanks C5. I have my mind set on building up the ol L98 and going with that. I do not pay to much attention about buying LS or w/e. If I can achieve 400 or so HP I will be happy. I have been to the performance shop here and talked to them, and he gave me a list to achieve around the 400 mark. So my list has now gotten bigger and a little more expensive, but my goal is to have it all working by end of 2006. I ordered my Nitto 555R tires this past Friday, and also my RA1 hood. I will have the tires this week, but about 2 weeks for the hood. Then I will start picking up the engine parts a few at a time. I found vortec heads that will take up to .555 lift, so I am going with a different cam....other than the LT4 kit.

Right now I am at:

Heads $700
Cam $250
HSR $500
30# Injectors $250
Fuel Pump $80
1.6 Roller Rockers $200

Then I still have to get the intake and heads gasket match ported. So it astill isnt to bad.
