No arguement with that.

Torque matters only in that if you multiply it by RPM, you get HP. If peak torque were THAT important, an L98 3rd Gen would be just as fast as an LS1 4th Gen (assuming equal weights, etc).

While that is true, you'll get yourself in trouble if you don't break it down some more. For example:

Car A and B weigh the same, and have the same amount of torque. The difference is that car A makes its 300 lb/ft at 3000 rpm, and it drops in a typical, linear fashion after that. Car B makes its 300 lb/ft at 5000 rpm, and it drops in a typical, linear fashion after that. Which car makes more HP? Geared and driven correctly, which car will be quicker and faster?

What about a 99+ 4.6? They aer still week utnil you hit Cobra and 05 GT territory... does he have a chance?

Actually.. a L98 car will keep up with an LS1 for a short time (off the line)

I don't understand your question. A 99+ GT is quite a bit quicker than a 96-98, but with a modded car, all bets are off. I've been beaten by Civics - even N/A ones. There is simply no way to accurately answer the question.

Sure. For the first 10 ft or so - unless both are geared/tired/driven correctly, at which point it will be the LS1 from the moment the clutch is dropped.

BTW...I'm not in any way dissing your car. I had an 85 Z28 many years ago.

To each their own.

The 99+'s are a LOT faster than pre 99?? What I am asking is if there is even a remote chance of his 305 keeping up w/ a 99+ GT.

Very nice car too :hail: Nice burnout; was that thing stock? I am not taking anything you say in a dissing *mannor* But thanx for your help so far

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

85-305 your possibilities are as big as your wallet, you wanna start bottom end work and get some good alluminum heads than you can start mesisng with the newer 4.6s, provided you have a gear/tranny and suspention to suffice. most newer 4.6s are good for mid to low 14s, ill be goddam if you cant get that out of your NA LG4 with a stock bottom end. remember what makes a motor powerful is how much air can get in and how much can get out most efectively. so you bump the cam up to hold the valves open higher and longer and get a nice lightweight efficient alluminum head you can make any motor scream, I mean c mon these hondas should be enough proof that n e thing can beat n e thing nowadays, Im from orchard park NY 85_305 and i have seen the ricers we have around here, most are trash but every now and again youll find one that is acctually been built the right way and those ****** f ers fly. Ask n e one, how much air in and how much air out. Once that is down just get a carb to suffice and a suspention to hold it all together and your in.

^NO FOCKING SHAT! YOU ARE FROM OP??? Dude.. i live like 30 minutes from you. I know what you are talking about regarding thos shatty ricers! They ALL suck around here, ther is NO "fast" rice around here.
But getting heads should be one of the number-one things for an LG4? I will look into them and I will tell Brian too.

99+ GTs are probably a good half second and 3-5 MPH quicker than a 96-98 GT.

Whether or not you can keep up depends mostly upon your budget. Honestly, assuming you like your car and wish to keep it, I'd consider saving for something a bit more performance oriented, such as a ZZ4 type of crate motor (or similar).

Truth be told, the wife was the primary driver of that one (I had just bought an 88 Mustang Coupe). That pic was taken at Coles Country Raceway (Illinois) back in the summer of 1988 (she was driving it). Car was a 100% bone stock LB9. It was quite the looker, but we had quite a few mechanical problems with it.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

ya id figure id say something considering ithat i seen ur from holland like 15 minutes away. ya your first mod depends on your money situation. I would exactly go heads first though, Becouse the LG4 has such a peanut cam in it all the head flow in the world wont do you no good unless you got those valves open higher and longer. If your looking for a hundred dollar mod and if you have a car to put around in while your 85 is being worked on than id recomend a mild cam/ lifter combo. U can usually get nice cam kits from summit for like 95$ and even with stock heads get a VERY measureABLE DIFFERENCE. if your looking cheaper id try an open element and a 30$ BM shift improver kit, though with just those 2 cheap mods you wont be beating any 4.6 stangs. BUT a mild hundred dollar cam, an open element to accomidate the new much needed airflow from the cam, maybe a cheap intake a shiftkit and a set of 3.23/ 3.73 gears to replace your 2.73s you have now. that would get you to a point of comfort with 96-98 4.6s.

Ill let you in on a little thirdgen secret, kind of an obvious one but its probably the cheapest half a second you will get (or close to). Bakc in the day i had an 86 camaro z28, great car......16 inch iroc wheels t tops it was great, it just didnt have n e get up n go, my 2.73s where killing at ALL SPEEDS! so i did a little research and found out that 85 and up v6 thirdgens got a 3.23/3.42 gear ratio, WHat i did was i went to the bone yard (i can give ya names/numbers if ya need) it cost me 125$ and i bought a complete axle out of a v6 car drum to drum. It was a DIRECT BOLT ON no mods needed. NOW keep in mind its gonna be the same carrier you already have now (1wheel wonder) but if you can learn to drive it good you will notice a huge improvement from this alone.

No, heads are not the #1 item on the LG4. Exhaust would be first without doubt. A good set of headers with a single 3" or dual 2.5" would do nice. Second, address the intake. The Performer RPM (don't bother with the standard Performer) will make noticably more power. Next you can address the internals. Even a relatively mild cam will wake the engine up, as the LG4 grind is the mildest cam ever thrown into any V8... ever! Heads? Sure, you could spend some $ for aftermarket heads. But the LG4s did come with "decent" heads stock. The 416's clean up very nice, and make some very impressive flow and power numbers that rival entry level aftermarket performance heads.

A worst case scenario 305, being a poorly geared automatic LG4 can achieve early SOHC 4.6 results (low 15s) with just intake, exhaust, and minor other mods. Been there! However that 2nd gen that the 305 is going into will hurt performance due to the cars 3700lb+ weight.

And its a damn shame that Bob, a Mustang guy knows more about this subject than all these "F-body enthusiasts".

Edit: And for those that still put down the 305, Motorweek got a 14.7 from a 1985 IROC with a automatic equipped 305.

Eecks. I don't know that much about 3rd Gens....but I do know how to use a few resources.

Edit for me: MM&FF ran 14.4 @ 96 mph with a T5 305 LB9 1LE back in 1990. Our 85 LB9 A4 Z28 went a best of 9.9 in the 1/8th (never went down the 1/4). That's probably a mid 15 or so.

Still, even some of the guys around here can't even do that. They hear 305 and spew out some BS someone else told them.

And why do the Ford guys get better times out of GM cars than the GM camp? Didn't that same mag get a 12.9 out of a stock 99Z?

First of all, I have a T5 w/ 323 rears. So a BM shift kit is outta the question How much better would an open element flow over the stock snorkel-setup?
How many v6 thirdgens have disk rears? How reliable are the v6 rears? I need another rear and tranny to accomodate the new mods I have and will be getting, and 342's dont sound so bad as long as I can get them in disk
Maybe when I get the Z on the road this summer we can meet up

If I were to port out my heads and get 1.97" valves, would that help quite a bit?
But you guy are saying that my 323 and T5 will hold up decent even *stock* to a 96 4.6?

Yes....they ran 12.89 in a stock 99 Z (killer January air in NJ) and 12.9 in an 01 SS during the summer.

FYI....next time someone doesn't believe you, show em this. I happen to have that issue as it was the first mag I was fortunate enough to be in.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

well maybe if i had read your sig ida seen taht you already have the t5 with a decent gear. 1st no v6 ever got 4wheel disk (exc tta) but that trick isnt somehting that applies to you, if you had an a4 car with those pesky 2.73 gears than it would be lookin into but as for your drivetrain........premium, thats a good gear for a stock or lightly modded lg4 and with a 5 spd will make it even zippier. an open element will flow alot better and some people say it will make your car sound badass at WOT, no real hp gains, maybe a tenth or 2 but if you need the improved airfloq for other various reasons talked about , tell ya what, try this. now please guys no flames here but just to give you an idea of what an open element would sound/drive like pop off your air cleaner lid. Wipe it off and flip it upside down back on the carb. Use your little circular wingnut that holds it on in cunjuction with some washers (as spacers) and try it out, hop in take it around the block, get WOT atleast once and tell us what you think, i would never permanantly do this becouse it looks retarded but it will jsut give you an idea if u wanna spend the loot on one. it takes literally 30 seconds, lol well atleast it might give ya something to do seeing how its all but 9 degrees out here in b lo, also another freebie.....timing adjustment, you can always cheat and over advance the timing a bit to make up for chain slack and give ya a few extra ponies.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

BTW bob your resources arent totally accurate, st states that the only available gear ratio in any 85 lb9 was 3.23 which is wrong, my 44k origional 85 ta lb9 has the aussie 3.27 9 bolt thirdgen.org resources are good but are constantly being updated for a reason....se where i am going?
