Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

Outside of pulling a trailer, why would anyone car that a performance car makes 300-ish lb/ft of torque @ 3000 rpm, but only 210 HP @ 4500 rpm?

That is incorrect. The 85s did make 215 HP (275 lb/ft torque @ 3200 rpm), but the the 89-92 LB9 made 230 HP and 300 lb/ft.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

I'd put my money on the 4.6 assuming its running right...

I have raced both in my car, and a 4.6 is a bit faster then a 305, I have seen carbed 305s run, 18s before at the track, best one I ever ran was a cammed, header, full exhaust, intake manifold, etc... 305, I raced it in my 3.4L, and he only edged me out by a car length, so he was likely running low 15s, maybe high 14s.

I see the GT running high 14s, maybe mid 14s. if he sucks low 15s.

no that is incorrect, the 85 LB9 was a s stated 215 hp, but after that GM stopped running the L98 cam in the LB9 and dropped the rating to 190hp. In 87 the 5.7 L98 came out and only put up 220hp and gm reintroduced the L98 cam 305s only in 5spd manual. It stayed that way until the speed density cars came out in 90 and all 305s and 350 both had l98 cams. some of these numbers have very slight variances only becouse some cars got dual converters...

Even with all those mods done to the 305, with that 305 in either the 76 or 85, he will get owned? BTW.. the 76 has a 3:27 rear..

So what are the torque specs for the 4.6 'Stangs??

About 285-390 depending on year, 2 valve or 4, and blown or not.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

What the **** stang has 390lbs of torque? Besides a Cobra I mean..
But 285 is the lowest the 4.6's go? How much do the 4.6's weigh? How much torque and weight for a 96GT?

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

the problem withe the lg4 style 305 is that its a big boat anchor. something like 150hp and 240ft/lbs. any mustang 96and up with a 4.6 will make quick work of a mostly stock 305 lg4, even with a cam. of course you can rip the motor down, bore it beef up your heads intake work exahaust work and tune that ol carb than you might be something more for the mustangs

I have no clue why torque specs would be any issue at all (seeing as we're not pulling trailers nor racing from 0-4000 rpm), but for the curious:

96-97 SOHC 4.6: 285 lb/ft @ 3500 rpm
98 SOHC 4.6: 290 lb/ft @ 3500 rpm
99-04 SOHC 4.6: 302 lb/ft @ 4000 rpm

96-98 DOHC 4.6: 305 lb/ft @ 4800 rpm
99/01 DOHC 4.6: 317 lb/ft @ 4750 rpm
03/04 DOHC 4.6: 320 lb/ft @ 4200 rpm (note: Mach 1 motor, not the blown Cobra motor)

05 3V SOHC 4.6: 320 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

The reason I ask torque is because Brian (my friend) doesn't want to do a 1/4 or anything, all he is going to do is race to about 60mph on his street (a mostly deserted street). So really all he would need is torque for this kind of race, not hp.
Firebirdmike: Do you think that doing cam, intake, cai, headers+full exhaust would be good enough to take him? (I dont believe he is doing anything to the heads, but I dunno)
SteveY-Actually, you *didn't* say above which car you were refering to

This is what I said. Notice how I included blown 4 valves? That is what a Cobra has in '03 and '04.

I think a 305 with all mods except for heads would probably beat a '96-98 GT Stang. Heads are the key to serious power, though. I would do them as well, if I was him. Plenty of cheap good heads for older 305s.

That's not really an accurate statement, but its not worth argueing about.

Ah, ok. I didn't know that the Cobra's were 4v's What would be a good set of heads for a 305 though? (For relatively cheap..)

How is that inaccurate? Torque is what carries a car to about 60mph, and after 60 or so it is hp. Am I not correct in this?
