305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

First, a stock 85 305 vs any year 4.6. Then a cammed, intake, carb'd, headered 305 vs any year 4.6.
My friend Brian has a 78 305 w/ a transplanted 85 or 86 engine w/ said mods. I say he will win, he thinks so as well, but this one punkass w/ a 4.6 thinks he will walk it.
Input please?

Stock it all depends on what year 4.6. The early ones (96-98) had crapy heads and intake compared to the more recent 4.6 (99+). Modded I will go with the 305 since it sounds like the 4.6 is still stock.

In the mid-80s, I think the 305 was only rated at like 160HP, which is weak.

I think the lowest power output for a 4.6L was 215HP.

The Mustang will probably win.

96/97 = 215hp
98 = 225hp
99+ = 260hp

In 1985 the stock z28 305 had 155hp, but the LB9 (tuned port) 305 available had 215 hp, so it depends which motor he has.

Also depends on which 4.6 you are talking about. 16V only or does the statement blanket the 32V motors too?

A stock 1985 305? I'll bet even my former Grand Marquis (9.9 @ 73 in the 1/8th) would have outrun one of those no sweat.

I had a modded 98Neon sport, my favorite kills were Old Irocs.
The 4.6 will kill him.
And the neon kills were just with fart can/cai/pulley.
Dont know about all the cam an stuff though.

I think the 4.6 is going to win. Why would you put all of that work into a 305????

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

-The mustang is I *believe* a 96..
-Don't Camaro's tend to have more torque than GT's though??
-I dont know if it is a 16v or 32. It is a 96 I think, so I am guessing a 16v.
-My friend just likes rebuilding ****. He has a 48' Case DC tractor, a '32 Case something or other tractor, his Camaro, and he wants to find another Camaro.
-So, you guys think his *modded* 305 will take a 96 GT w/ 4:10's? I forgot it isn't stock, it has 4:10's and a 5spd

That GT will probably run mid to high 14s with a good driver. What does the 305 run in the 1/4?

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

as stated....what engine is the 305? carb, tbi or tpi??

i know my 87 305 TPI with bolt ons (ram air, airfoil, pulley, gutted cats and a catback) would outrun the 4.6s at least in shorter street races. the TPI was only making 190hp stock, maybe 210 modded. but the stock torque was something like 325#s....thats almost what the 300hp LS1 makes.

up top the 4.6 would porbably out run a TPI, but in something like the 1/8th mile i doubt it. specially since the stang will have a hard time hooking with 4.10s. unless he's got DRs...which would make it unfair.

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

I am not too sure what the 305 runs, I dont think he ever track tested it. But it is a 4bbl with an Edelbrock 600 Performer on it. Stock it makes like.. 250lbs of torque. Any idea's what it makes w/ those mods? (a where-abouts maybe?)

Re: 305 vs 4.6.. who would win?

an 85 305 carb motor in a 76 would be destroyed by any 4.6 motor, an 85 camaro with an 85 305 would get smoked by any 4.6 mustang. The LB9s in 85 where the strongest 305s ever, something like 215hp and 300 ft/lbs of tq stock, especially if you get the 9 bolt 327 rear end those cars will really move. My 85 trans am was good for 14.97 @94 mph with an exahaust...
