ok got the car painted back in mid august.. had it buffed about a month or two later.. a few dull spots that need to be buffed a little better (but thats my fualt because i havent taken the car back to him he said to bring it by but ive been busy) anyway their are a lot of swirls left from the buffer. he says its "chatter" not swirl marks... but a bunch of smal circles.. i call swirls makes sense to me *shrug* anyway whats the best thing you can get to remove them from a store like wal-mart or advance auto anyway. i saw something that looked like it might be really good, meguiars scratch X. 7 bucks a tube though.

 

was it a professional that buffed it? the buffer is actually the only thing that will get rid of the swirls. that is the purpose of buffing things. Scratch-x is a good FILLER. <meaning it will hide/cover up the swirls for awhile, but they will magically reappear in a week or 2.

 

Why not take or make the time to let the pro finish up his job?

 

i was plannin on it, but i figured if i could do it myself i wasnt gonna bother. looks like ill figure out a way to leave the car again *shrug* and if he cant get his swirls out i guess ill have to take it to another body shop and pay to have them get em out *sigh* i hate being so picky

but thanks for the tip on the scratch-x didnt know if it would actually remove them or not thanks for pointing that out!!

 

I would find a new detailer/shot if he's not getting the job done.

With proper rotary use, there shouldn't be any swirls/holograms/"chatter."

You shouldn't be responsible for paying for it either, IMO.

 

ahhh. this guy was recommended to me by every body shop around here because at the time i needed color sanding and buffing. none of them wanted to touch something with sandpaper that someone else had painted lol. (long story dont ask) but apparently recommendations dont mean a lot because he told me some type swirls-- like i said he calls chatter if you cant see where they start and end *shrug*-- are normal when using a buffer on one like that. or he just wanted to be lazy and let me think that to make his life easier i love being able to go back and double check information im told using the internet thanks for the info everyone!

 

If you want a swirl free paint job, you need to use a clean foam polishing pad with polish.

If your paint was a little rough, he might have compromised and used a compounding pad and maybe a more aggressive polish.

The right way to get an average paint finish looking great is to buff it with a foam compounding pad and fine to medium cut compound and them use a foam polishing pad with polish and go over it once or twice with that, and then wax.

Usually they only do it once because of time so they compromise and you end up with swirls.

 

Check out medium abrasive polishes such as 3m Finesse It Swirl Mark Remover. Used with a PC (buffer), it will make short work out of most swirls.

 

If he is a good body man, he should be able to buff out a car without any buffer chatter, I am not getting a good feeling about your choosen body man. You might best consult a good detailer to get an orbital foam pad buff job.

 

thats what i was thinking too, unless he was just telling me that so he could be lazy and not take the time to do it without swirls.. cause i remmeber he said he charges more for black because it takes more time.. made me kinda think he thought he could get away with less detail cause my car is red...

 

I just bought my own rotary buffer and started teaching myself how to buff. Even though I did leave one small burn mark on my first car, I didnt leave any swirl or chatter marks on it (granted it wasnt black). If he left swirls with a rotary he doesnt have a clue what he is doing, I would take it to someone else. A proper rotary buffing is what it needs.

 

just an update on this guys, took the car back to him and gave him another shot at it. he did great this time round, wander what teh difference was oh well point is, no more swirls like before (still some small marks but these are nothing compared to what it had, this is almost magnifying glass small plus i had one other small detail done, ill get some pics of it up when i get one last thing done
