Two young men are fighting for their lives today after the Pontiac Firebird they were riding in was hit head on by an alleged drunken driver going the wrong way down Route 1, police said.
Alexander Booker, 20, of Foxboro and Paul Cataldo, 21, of Walpole were driving south on Route 1 in Walpole early yesterday when a Chevy Camaro smashed into them from the wrong direction, Walpole police Lt. Scott Bushway said.
The 12:45 a.m. wreck left both men in critical condition, while the driver of the Camaro, James Conroy, 28, escaped with non-life threatening injuries.
Conroy, who has a lengthy record of motor vehicle violations, is being charged with operating under the influence and operating on the wrong side of a divided highway, Bushway said.
Registry of Motor Vehicle records show that Conroy refused a chemical test after the crash, and Bushway said officers believe he was intoxicated based on a conversation they had with him at the scene.
Conroy has several previous motor vehicle violations for speeding, failure to pay tickets, using improper equipment and failure to stop for a police officer, according to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. He was treated at Norwood Hospital for non-life threatening injuries after the crash.
