retarding ignition timing Q

How do you guys generally retard your timing with a nitrous kit? I have a Madz28 chip which has more timing added I assume. I would like an easy way to pull out timing with a basic 100 horse nitrous kit.

The best way I have seen is to use a Mallory hyfire VI and retard it 2 degrees for every 50hp you use in Nitrous. Talk to Ion to see how much advanced the timing is for the chip. I know he usually advances 1 degree on the pcm tune if you opt for the premium fuel only option. Hope this helps

Yea, the Mallory unit(like mentioned) or the other commonly used ignition box is the MSD digital 6 Plus........both of these units just have a wire coming from the box, that when supplied 12 volts the retard circut is activated...and then your pre-selected amount of retard is pulled..........I would also find out what your tunes total advance is "exactly"....then pull the 2 degrees per 50 HP of nitrous increase(plus 1-2 for a safety margin)...at that point immediately after a nitrous pass, read each of your plugs to make sure everything looks good(none too lean)........you can always pull a bit less timing if everything looks good, but it's always a good idea to start out pulling the recomended amounts......PS: if you havent planned to already...I would also run a slightly colder plug even for a 100 shot....just to raise the detonation threshold some.......a set of autolite 103's will give both good NA performance, and plenty of safety when on the bottle...............Joe

Just have Ion send you out another chip, you dont have to send yours back he will just send you another one just timing takin out, with the timing retard 4 degrees 2 for every 50hp. I have a chip for stock motor 4 degrees advanced another chip for a 50 shot 2 degrees retard and the one im using now 4 degrees retard for 100 shot.

I don't want to lose n/a horsepower though.

Correct approach. Your chip needs the tune for maximum NA performance. You take out timing when you spray with an external box.

With all the money you spent on tunes you could have had a Mallory 685 and not be losing N/A power. Unless all you do is run on the bottle and never run the car N/A.

Ive spent 125.00 total for my chips got a good deal. I only run on nitrous when i race, i only drive my car once in a while. When i drive i dont go above 3000 rpms unless im racing and using nitrous. Yes you will lose top end power when you retard timing with your chip, since i didnt care for N/A performance and wanted to be safe went with a chip only.
