Yanking my engine out!!
Yanking my engine out!!
1997 SS M6 96k miles, gm847 cam, jethot longtubes, slp loudmouth, madz28 tune....
Ive been kicking around the idea of pulling out my motor and going back over everything to freshen it up and fix some leaks. I did a cam install back in 2008 and havent really driven it much in the last 2 years, just been sitting. has developed some starting issues and wouldnt start for a while, but was running when i went to put it inside.
Will be replacing all the seals on the engine, recoating the headers, removing the AC, tracing down some wiring spots that may be burnt, fixing the coolant level issue and the constant brake light on the dash. new plugs and wires, new coil. I replaced the opti with the cam and hasnt had many mles since. i replaced the fuel pump at the cam swap as well.
I started yesterday. ramps under the back wheels, big jackstands up front
removed ypipe to free headers
pulled everything electrical off and pulled it up to the windshield
unhooked fuel lines
drained cooland and removed hoses
cold air intake off
battery out(cables stay with the engine, just slid them down through the bay.
Im waiting on my bro to bring over his cherry picker as i sold mine thinking i wouldnt need one anytime soon. go figure. I didnt need to do this in the first place but i got bored.
I still need to figure out how im disconnecting the ac, brake lines and power steering. Ac is full but doesnt cool. just ordered the delete pulley.
Leaving the wheels on when i drop the engine out the bottom, will a jack be good enough to pull the drivetrain out using the wheels as support? as well as something under the trans?
Will be updating with pics later, my phones downstairs so i cant upload them atm.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
ive been reading a few different threads about it. trying to do it the easiest way possible as everyone does it a little different.
Im about to discharge the AC and figure out where to disconnect the brake lines, loosen everything up and wee what happens, still waiting on the engine lift but might see if i ca get it high enough without it using my jack and some wood.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
cant get these brake lines undone. using 12mm wrench and it just wants to strip out the head of the bolt. looks like ill be buying a line wrench to get the job done.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
git the wrench i needed to get the brake lines off but it still wont do the job, keeps stripping them, any ideas how i can get around this? I thought about cutting them, but would rather save the money.
Re: Yanking my engine out!!
Try using vice grips to squeeze the end of the line wrench together while loosening the nut. If the nut is already rounded off too much, you may have to just use vice grips on the nut.
Re: Yanking my engine out!!
Thats what I did up there but I used several shots of pb blaster and even tried to use torch to heat it up but eventually had to use vice grips. Word of caution the vice grips will want to distort it some so finding the place between too tight and distorting and too loose and slipping is important. I was fortunate enough I didnt distort much and once outside of engine bay I worked it over enough with a file and some epoxy that I was able to use the line wrench on re-installation. Sometimes you will have a little difference in wrenches and can get a different bite(wasn't the case for me) but anytime you can use the correct tool to begin with do it as may have prevented it. I also tried to pinch my line wrench by using a sledge hammer(didnt help) on other things ive had luck using something to take the free space out acting as a shim or wedge to create a better grip(again I had no luck there either). Good vicegrips in my opinion will serve you better than a sloppy pair.
Re: Yanking my engine out!!
They make a set of vice grips that go around the nut and almost boxes in the nut. I have used it several times on older brake lines as it was the only wrench that worked.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
now as soon as i get my hands on this cherry picker this baby is as good as out. got my ac delete pully in today as well.
side note. some of what i read said to remove the brake fluid reservoir, is this needed? or even the lines from the booster to the abs unit?

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
I personally vacuumed out all the power steering fluid and the brake fluid. I had to loosen the brake master cylinder from the booster. There are two torx head bolts that I couldn't get to because the master cylinder was in the way.
But I had removed the ABS proportional valve assembly earlier so the brake lines were already disconnected. Better to just go ahead and get it out of the way. These torx head bolts are two of the bolts that go to the struts.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!
Well, its out. finally got my hands on a cherry picker and got it out on thursday. only issue was one of the strut mount bolts on the pass side. the nut thats mounted to the underside broke loose and we had to cut the bolt off the top and pount it through. gonna need a new upper a arm mount. thinking about removing the entire ac/heat box for a cleaner look.
