Re: Yanking my engine out!!

well i made a little progress with a few things. i got all the heating and ac lines out. I did the !wire mod. and working on the !fuel line and !hood latch mod. I will prob go back and tuck the wires better before i put it everything back together. Cant wait to ditch those fuel lines next. Has anyone relocated the fuse box at all? Doesnt look like it can go far

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

I went ahead and ordered new plugs, NGK TR55's like i already had, got 24 of them so i can do my other rides as well. went with the MSD 8.5 spark plug wires. ordered new gaskets for the intake, heads and timing cover/water pump. I'm going to sightly port the intake and the spare set of heads i have sitting around and stick those in when the time comes. still havent sent my headers off for coating. and havent started on the engine yet. still need some fuel line and fittings to reroute the fuel lines. and the msd coil will be ordered as soon as i get started on the project again. Ive been lazy lately with the hollidays.

Car has 96k miles on it and has always run full synthetic oil, is it a good idea to keep with it o would it be alright for me to change to non synthetic??

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

I would not touch the heads and intake. Most of the time any "slight porting" by yourself hurts more than it helps. Leave the geometry of the intake and heads alone, IMO.

You can use whatever oil you like, synthetic or non-synthetic is fine.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

I was told by several porters not to mess with the intake unless I knew what I was doing. I've seen two styles of LT1 intake manifold runners, rectangle and like a trapezoid style. From what I understand there is little gain to be had messing with the rectangle ones, especially if you don't know what you're doing or you have mild heads. Trapezoid style can be improved on, but do you have the proper bits to get it right?

Half the time porting heads isn't worth the time and tools even if you do know what you're doing and frankly there are probably only 5-6 people with accounts on this site who truly know what the are doing.

Just my opinion on it. If you want some budget port work send em out to LE to get resurfaced, cleaned up, checked out with some light porting.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

haven't updated this in a little while, but I did reinstall the engine to move it out of the garage. Hadnt done all the work I wanted to before doing so. but I needed the garage for my new baby. 13' ZL1 Vert M6.

I found out why it wouldn't run

I ordered a new optispark, this one that went bad was a Delphi from 2008 when I installed my cam and installed the waterpump drive seal wrong, oil had been leaking out slowly since and filled my opti with oil.

I ordered a black and red chandler motorsports brand with lifetime warranty for 135 shipped. seem to have a good rep going on these.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

with the budget I have and how little I drive the car, i'll give it a shot. if nothing else I can use the sensor from it for mine. I cleaned mine up but I don't trust the sensor

I am curious im about too change my timing chain and want to know how to install the waterpump seal correctly. I heard this can be tricky. What did you do that was wrong?

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

It's the top, small, seal. I just put it on last time not knowing it had to slide over the shaft without being pushed outward. The inner flap needs to face the engine not the front end. Mine was on wrong and leaked oil where I couldn't see it all this time. I used a small solder coil contailer and wrapped some electrical tape around it to make it stretch over the drive shaft. Ill get pics tomorrow of what I mean.

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

Awesome that's what I was hoping for. Thank you guys!

jer4251,
I did a double take and read that you had replaced the opti in 2008. If I understand correctly 95 and up are sealed distributors. How in the world did oil get in there?

Re: Yanking my engine out!!

I sold the spare set of heads that I had. not going to bother with anything as far as the heads go for now. I just want it back on the road again. My money is needed for ZL1 mods. on a side note, I just spent a good 30 minutes watching that guy port those heads.....
