Re: when installing valve guides...

i measured the one i have in the freezer and compared it to the ones at room temperature. came up with .0005 difference! i figured it would be more than that.

i think the warm ones were .557 and the cold one was .5565.

how cold is the dry ice?

The dry ice will shrink it about .003.If you take the time to measure it it will be warmed up enough that it won't go in and have to sit in the ice another 8 hrs.

About -110F as best I remember. You can take a tennis ball and freeze it with dry ice and drop it it will shatter. It will not hurt metal of any type or heat treat.I have used it for 30+years to install all press fit's of any kind ie. 16" OD bearing 8" thick has a -1 press fit.I froze it overnight and it slid in the hole by hand, the hole was overhead and I had to hold the heavy thing until it warmed up to hold itself in the hole.

Re: when installing valve guides...

-.001 is the hole is .001 tighter than the OD of the brg or the hole would mike at 15.999" On a 16" brg that's a TIGHT fit so the brg don't move.

Re: when installing valve guides...

ok, i couldnt wait until tomorrow to get some dry ice. so i put the heads in the oven at 200-225 and left them in there for a while. took them out and with about 15-20 gentle taps the guide went right into place!

i appreciate the advise man, but just got impatient!! ill definitely try it the next time i do this..

thanks...

It gave the oven quite an odor, which was persistent. My wife also didn't like the "interior decorating" job that resulted!

Women have no sense of humor and just don't understand mens work.
