Whats the best oil pump?

Hey guy's I had the dreaded brake stand loss of oil pressure crap happen to me so I am upgrading the oil system now so I don't have any future issues. I already ordered a 7qt trap door street/ strip pan with a 3/4 pick up for it. I was thinking the moroso Blueprint pump, but I don't want the low oil pressure assoiated with the anti-cavatation design. What would be a good hi volume/ high pressure pump and what part number? I am not too brand specific just want to do this once.

The GM part is better than it gets credit for.

If you don't want that, your logical choice is probably Melling.

Listen to the man.
Bet as many smallblocks have been destroyed by high volume pumps as those saved by one. Your higher capacity pan will help avoid that but what I am saying is that inder sustained high rpms people have lost motors to high volume pump because they pumped the oil to the topend faster than it could drain back down.
Two of the Impala guys lost built motors to this at a big national event back in July, these were well built motors too.

Frankly, there is nothing srong with a stock pump that has been inspected. Use a stock pump with a high pressure spring and that will do the job.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

The pumps with the anti- cavitation grooves and ported exits do not have "low" idle, but erratic idle, they would not drop below 20 psi on a healthy motor. If you do run a HV pump these mods along with a higher capacity pan with baffles and a good windage screen and scraper are all fail safe.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

Ok so Anyone have a part number for a good pump for me? Current mods are headers, cam(847) and nitrous as soon as I get this done, my engine has about 80k on it and was perfectly healthy until this happened, not the oil pressure isn't as high as it was before, but no knocking or strange noises, I drove it another 50 miles home from the track. I am thinking about rebearing the bottom end while I have the pan off, any suggestions on bearings? Also should I get STD or .001 under? This is just a temp fix till I move back to the states.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

I would really like to use a HV as the motor will still probably be a little loose in the cam bearings.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

I am mystified by the HV oil pump thing. Unless you have an engine set up with loose clearances, it will do no good whatsoever, take more power to drive, and possibly lead to oil starvation.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

Stock vloume pump or a Melling M55 replacement.

A certain someone(who has already posted) told me this.....and I will trust that with my new motor.

Its not like the stocker has crap pressure, I mean mine had 50~55 warm@ wot with 155k miles. Thats plenty for me.

Re: Whats the best oil pump?

If the crank is not damaged you might get away with stock bearings, do not try to put undersized ones in without having the crank machined to that size.
Reread what rskrouse said about the HV pumps being parasitic and possibly leading to starvation. The starvation is exactly what I spoke of in my first post. Guys have definetely LOST ENGINES to high volume pumps. If you do everything right with an aftermarket oilpan and make sure the drainback goes well and such I am sure they are safe to run but with a stock pan it is asking for trouble.
