What kind of oil for fist time statup after cam install?
What kind of oil for fist time statup after cam install?
I heard dyno oil, but is there anything else I can use? I've heard that using either too heavy or too light (can't remember which) can increase the odds of spinning a bearing.
Re: What kind of oil for fist time statup after cam install?
yeah use the cheap thin stuff (Id go 530). the idea with the thin oil is to get oil press. quick at startup and the reason cheap stuff is cause your gonna change it a couple of times before you even drive the car (atleast thats what I do to make sure to get out any dust/grit that may have gotten into the engine). so buy a case of cheap 5w30 and two oil filters to do two oil changes before you drive it. I lbring the eng. rpm up to about 2K rpm for bout a minute while checkin for leaks or anything like that, then change the oil after that first min. or two. then I let it run to make sure it gets to normal operating and all is good, mayb eletting it run 15-20 min.s or drive it around the block couple times before changing it again. its cheap ins. to make sure its clean in there. the you can put in whatever oil you want. synth. amsoil is what I like to use lately.

I agree with what has been posted sofar but you might want to check with your spring manufacturer about maybe heat cycling them a bit, let it come up to temp and completely cool once or twice before driving and change the oil after that too.
I would also add do not use cam lube just use engine oil to lube everything as you put it back together. Cam lube is designed for flat tappets which have specific breakin requirements not needed with our roller cams.
