water plugs

hi guys......
I have engine oil leak...I'm going today to fix it...
but I have to take out the engine.. so I can easy replace the seals. and the water plugs.....
my qustion is: what's the purpose of the water plugs???

They're called freeze plugs. If you have only water in the block and it freezes, the plugs will pop out and save your block from cracking.
Don't think you have to worry about that in Bahrain.

but I heard about that from a friend......
if they made for the cold weathers..... why they are keeping them in our cars....if we dont have a very cold climate......
I heard that they made also for engine pressure....
I mean if the engine have a high pressure from the high temp. the water plugs will removed... that will make the pressure out of the engine....so the heads and the block will be in safe from the high pressure...... what do you think guys???????!!!!!!!!!
