vacuum canister

just wondering what the point of the stock one is? the line that runs down the passenger side with the group of wires there, seems like it runs into that long round cylinder mounted under the coolant bottle, as far as i can see, thats the only line that runs into that canister, just wondering what the point of that thing is? thanks guys

The vacuum canister in the front fender is part of the HVAC vacuum control system. It stores vacuum, so there is a sufficient reserve during WOT operation, so that the HVAC duct flapper doors don't loose the vacuum the powers them, and move to their default positions. Shoebox has a diagram of the HVAC vacuum system. PArt #37 is the vacuum canister:

o see. so if i removed this, the doors would not function properly at WOT correct? so when just cruising, they would work ok? im just wondering becasue i broke that line at some point, and if they will only misfunction during WOT, ill just get rid of that whole line and canister, or is that a bad idea? thanks injuneer

I don't know how the doors will work. I removed mine a long time ago, but the car never gets driven on the street, so I don't really care whether the doors work or not. The bigger your cam, the sooner you're going to run out of vacuum.

The controls will work similar to what you are now experiencing. There will be no reserve vacuum during periods when engine vacuum is low (high engine load).

What line did you break, and why can't you just replace it?

Well it actually broke in two places. The three way valve thing where it comes off the manifold and down by the canister. I could fix it but I have biggger things on my mind ya know... If my defrost will work I think I might just leave it alone...

I can tell you this about when my vacuum check valve went bad.

I could go WOT with the system on the passenger vents and it would switch to the defrost vents. Then, when I got off WOT...it would come back to the passenger vents.

I could have the vents reversed, but it may not work at all without the canister. I have not tested the system without canister.
