Question tranny cooler question

i have read all the online installs of the tranny coolers. but it seems you are just disconnecting the stock cooler and replacing it, does the stock cooler suck that bad?? is there anyway to hook it up inline with the stock cooler? if so does anyone have a write up on it?

There is no real stock cooler. The lines just go into the radiator. It sucks really really bad at cooling the tranny fluid, it's actually almost useless. A 28,000 GVW B&M tranny cooler is like $60-70 bucks. All it does is unhook the lines from the radiator and run them through the aftermarket tranny cooler instead. Since the cooler is dedicated only for the transmission it's much much more efficient. BTW total install time for an amateur is probably less than an hour. Well worth the cost, IMO it's well worth any cost. Just about the best preventative measure you can take.

what do you think about mounting it in the passenger fender wheel well with vents cut into the fender well for it?

Even though its not technically a trans cooler, it does help a lot in cooling the fluid. As for the aftermarket one.....it runs inline with the stock cooling system. You're adding it on not bypassing the old one.

What I did is run my line from the tranny into the aftermarket cooler than through the original inlet to the radiator. The exit stays the same. The stock system is technically a trans cooler my man. The after market one is just an auxilary cooler. It would be a bigger PITA to plug the old one.

I doubt the engine will run any cooler but your tranny sure as heck will. I think almost everyone mounts theirs in front of the current radiator. Some say this inhibits air getting into the radiator and not allowing it to cool the engine temp down any but I haven't had any problems.

Also check out this site for a complete install with pictures.

well i mean if the stock radiator is trying to cool down the tranny, then thats adding extra heat to the water, therefore if the cooling system only has to worry about the engine, it would take longer to heat and it would allow the water to cool a little more before its dumped back into the engine, but i donno thats just what i thought, maybe there is no difference

When I converted to the TH400, from a T56, I had no tranny cooler in the radiator. I added a Perma-Cool fan assisted cooler, in the front of the drivers side fender. Handles an 800HP nitrous motor, 5K flash, non-locking convertor.
