Too many miles to mod?

Hey all. My LT1 just crossed 80,000 miles a few days ago. I would really like to mod the car some, but do you think I have too many miles to mod it? Should I rebuild it?

It seems to run fine to me. Always starts up the first time. I don't really know how to tell if its not running to its full potential. How much would a full rebuild cost?

Just give me your thoughts.

there are guys with 170,000 miles putting in cams and heads...i just hit 101200 miles and am going for heads, headers, and cam...these cars will run a long time with proper care and maintenance...just dont drive it hard and put that kind of abuse towards it and you will be fine....80,000 miles is just getting broke in

Yea really.

My car is about to hit 78,000 and i'm getting ready for a Nitrous setup (100 shot)

Make sure u maintain regular maintenance and give it a compression check every now and again. watch oil pressure, and make sure u have enough oil so u don't spin a bearing. other than that, have fun and happy modding!

I have approx 209,000 miles on my '94 z28 w/ stock bottom end (everything original ) plus mods in sig and I'm getting ready to add NX wet kit-100 shot. If you take care of them, they take care of you. At 80K, you're just getting it broke in if it has been take care of properly (i.e. oil changes, etc). Don't Rebuild, Build !!!

I've got the mods in my sig at 89k right now. I'll get just past 90k this year before I put the Z away again. By the time I do heads and cam, I'll be close to 100k or a little over.

An engine with 50k could be run into the ground and when someone adds mods it poops the bed. OTOH, an engine could've been very well maintained, have 100+k miles on it and stand up to a heads & cam just fine. I did my cam with 103k miles on the odo and all has been well (113k now). I don't go to the track, but I don't totally baby it all the time either. Every situation is different. You have to make the call..

Shoot, I hope I make it to 60K. I just hit 40K this year. I say build your engine up. I'd just save some cash just incase something does happen. But in this hobby it's likely to happen to any one, new or used.

130k miles on mine, did heads and cam 5k ago. So far the motor has been fine with the extra power and 6200 rpm.

Same boat here!! Except I spin to 6500 with no problem. Car is stronger than ever. My cylinder walls looked like they had 30,000 miles on them when I had it apart at 122,000. Now its at 128,000 and still doin fine. Mod it!

Yea I know what you mean, I could still see some crosshatch on my cylinder walls, it was amazing! I have the feeling that the car was babied before I got it, and although I don't necesarily baby it, I keep up with the maintenance. I never get on it when the motor is cold, when I start the motor, I always let it run with no load(not in gear, no AC etc) for at least 30 seconds to let the oil circulate before I put a load on it.

I threw a set of ported heads and a CC305 at a 94,000 mile bottom end. It went 12.38 @ 111.9 MPH 2 weeks ago .
Surprisingly, even with that many miles, the cylinder bores were still in great shape. It still has 70# of oil pressure idling/cold & 35# idling/ hot...With regular Pennzoil 10 W 30.
