Timing Chain...options and opinions

Hey yall. I know most people go with the LT4 Extreme Duty set, and alot of others go with the Cloyes. Which one should I get? I only wanna do it once...during my cam install. What is the p/n for the Cloyes. Ever heard of anyone running a Pete Jackson Gear Drive or a Jesel Belt Drive on our cars?

The cloyes part # is 9-3145. I believe you can only run the cloyes chain if you have an electric H2O pump though, do you have one?

naw I wasn't actually plannin on doin the electric w/p I have heard too many complaints about them. They are great for low RPMS but no match for a mechanical pump in the upper RPM ranges from what I heard.

Do we HAVE to use a cloyes chain with electric h20 pumps, or do we just need a '87 up sbc chain. Dynagear for example (just an example, could not think of anotherone). ???

I just installed a new cam and a new timing chain set and went through a similar selection process. If you only have mild mods and nothing outrageous planned, the ED timing set should work just fine. You don't need anything exotic to get the job done.

Forget the Pete Jackson stuff on an street legal OBDII vehicle, as it it too noisey for the PCM and KR functions.

The world's quickest LT1, 1,125HP, 9.04@155mph, used the Extreme Duty timing set. After 4 years with no major rework the timing chain was still in good condition. I run the ED set with a decent solid roller cam and a 300-shot of juice.... no problems.

Dave Wendland ran the Pete Jackson gear drive on his 94 LT1. He did a lot of machine work to the timing cover to get it in, then decided he couldn't stand the noise and the other headaches, and removed it.

Knock sensors do not take well to gear drives.

The LT4 Xtreme Duty is well worth it. Just make sure you talk to a machine shop when you try and swap out the water pump drive gear!

Here's a tip: Talk to Jason Cromer about them... you can look up his dealership phone # on the forum. His price on the complete kit beats both Thudner Racing and Scoggin-Dickey.

Good point about the W/P gear. That would require some work to install properly.

I chose not to even mess with it. I simply purchased a new W/P drive shaft assemby that comes with the gear installed. No need to hassle with a press, plus you get a new set of bearings! That P/N is GM#10219554 for $37.31
