For those seeking taller valve covers
Due to the recent FLOOD of private messages and emails. I am going to start this thread about valve cover information. First off let me take the time to thank anybody who has seeked out my help for the valve covers. I have tried to answer your questions as best I could. I am writing this thread so that you all can use it as a reference when trying to use aftermarket valve covers due to the tight clearances of our ugly stock ones.
I was set on using new valve covers because A. The stock ones are nasty and I was having problems with them and my 1.6 Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller rockers. I had always wondered what it would take to put aftermarket valvecovers on with out all the cutting welding and pain in the **** steps to getting some valve covers to fit. Also I didn't want to put those 200+ dollar LT4 valve covers on. I'm sorry $200 is too much for plastic esp if this plastic isn't going to make me "go fast" On with the instructions shall we.
1. Remove alternator
2. Remove those useless braces that tie the alternator to the intake manifold. Now BEFORE you ask, I haven't ran these braces for about 3 years, many others have run with out them for years so them not being there is OK.
3. Remove that PCV tube from the valve cover to the throttle body.
4. Remove valve covers.
5. Install heads and cam (optional)
6. Get a file, Die Grinder, Dremel or something that grind alluminum.
7. Now on the rear of the alternator there is a little round ear as outlined in this picture. http://members.***.net/eplanajr/cart...nd1%20tips.JPG That little ear is what needs to be removed. It isn't much at all and shouldn't take more than 30 minutes of work or so.
8. This is what the alternator should look like when it is done. http://members.***.net/eplanajr/cart...atorgrind1.jpg
9. This is what my covers had to clear. http://members.***.net/eplanajr/cartech/motor1.jpg
10. Put the valve covers adn and test fit with the alternator. Everything should clear, but if not, grind a little more. Here are a few close up pics of the alternator and the valvecover. http://members.***.net/eplanajr/cart...BZODMotor1.JPG
http://members.***.net/eplanajr/cart...BZODMotor2.JPG
11. Put the alternator on and belt too.
12. Here are some final installation pictures.

Parts needed:
Valve covers Centerbolt 87+ SBC style
Gaskets
Breathers
Grommets
Here is what I used for my install:
Polished Proform valve covers (I wanted black ones, which is what they have but out of stock when I got them, I got mine at a local GM dealership)
Made For You Over the Valve Cover Looms (bolts where long enough)
Push In Valve cover Oil cap. I also relocated this to the driver's side (theres less crap on that side)
This link has everything you need except for the breathers. I used Moroso Breathers availiable at any decent performance store. K&N ones will work fine.
Vacume Cap for the throttlebody (no more oil in the intake )

I had to pay $200 for plastic valve covers (LT4) b/c I couldn't find any ones that looked cool that would even come remotely close, and I didn't want "Chevrolet" written on my Pontiac. Anyone know of any other valve covers that are short enough to leave the alt where it is at, look good, and don't say "Chevrolet"?

There are plain polished alluminum ones on Ebay that are nearly identical in style to the ones i posted except there is no logo anywhere, no chevrolet, nothing. There are some that are engraved with some designs and stuff too. Search on ebay, but you will still have to do what I mentioned in my first post.

Yup...I've got the same covers, with the only difference being I got the chromed ones. The alternator modification isn't really any big deal. I did chose to reuse the upper alt. bracket, though.
Pictures of mine are on my web site...Opening page, top left corner. If you click on the engine pictures, they'll enlarge.

On the Made For You looms, you will have to spend about 10 minutes shaving them just a little bit. YOu have to round off the sharp corners on the part that sits on the valve cover so they will fit in there flushly. No leaks on mine. And look sweet as hell!

gotta hand it to you. That is great info. So many people go out and buy plane old valve covers just because the options are not there. If someone was really smart they'd make a billet alternator without that notch in it and make a few bucks, plus pretty up that nasty chunk of necessary metal that sits on top of my engine. My engine is beautiful except the ugly **** alternator
