Stripped oil pan drain plug

My drain plug on my oil pan is starting to get stripped. What can I do to fix the problem? Is there maybe like a rubber plug i can put in to prevent a future leak?

Yeah they're available at any local parts store for like $5, just be sure it has a new gasket on it or it will leak like a bastard....

Just a thought here. If your drain plug is stripped then whats the codition of the threads on the oil pan? I think I would chase the threads on the oil pan before installing the new plug.

Change your plug out and if you find out your pan threads are stripped as well just get a self tapping plug to put in.

Are you sure there are even threads in the pan? I've never had an oil pan off, but I never thought there were really threads in it, just the plug. Maybe I'm and idiot.

If it "screws in" it needs threads. There is a metal reinforcing plate tack welded behind the pan sheet metal that has the threads. Yes, it is possible to strip the threads in the pan. In that case, you by an "oversize" self-threading plug.

There are many universal drain plugs out there... Maybe you should just go to a 10min oil change place, pay for the oil change and ask them to put a universal plug on it

Sorry guys I didnt explain well enough. The threads in the pan itself are getting stripped not necessarily the bolt. So could I buy a selp tapping plug or a universal plug at an auto parts store?
