Stock RWHP numbers??
Re: Stock RWHP numbers??
I bought my 94 Z28 6-speed a few months ago with 28k miles on it. The previous owner had it dyno'd and took it to a 1/4 strip once. The car is bone stock except for a k&n drop in filter. It made 245hp and 295tq on the dyno (don't know what kind), and ran a 13.9 in the quarter. He gave me the dyno sheet with the car. It probably says what kind of dyno it was.

The reason their numbers are high compared to what the GM ratings are is because GM underrates the horsepower on their F-Bodies. Look at LS1 cars. Their RATED at 305HP, and commonly dyno 300 REAR WHEEL horsepower. That would put them at around 340ish at the crank through an M6.
Also, an M6 produces some of the lowest parasitic loss out of any manual tranmissions for a v8 car ever produced. Most people are commonly seeing about a 13 to 14% loss. Thats not alot.
Average RWHP for these cars is :
M6 - 250-260ish
A4 - 240-250ish
If your buying an LT1 car, more than likely it will have higher miles. Before buying a single mod, I would get plugs, over the valve cover plug wires from Elite Sparkplug, a new fuel filter, change the oil, run it for a couple weeks getting it hot, then change the oil again to get an idea of the condition of the motor/see how dirty it is. I would run a quality synthetic oil. And then get a cold air intake for it. Buy a quality one though, none of the ebay cheapies.

But when caomparing apples to apples I would expect numbers to be rather closer than what is being posted, apples in this case being a bone stock engine. I understand that there are variables to consider but when one guy dynos an LT1 and pops 300 RWT and another guys pops 265 RWT on identical engines and drivetrains then somthing doesnt sound right and there is probobly a reason and it aint the engine in most cases. I think a lot of it has to do with the test equipment being calibrated accurately and being used correctly.
I also understand that dynoing bone stock engines that are ten years old and engines that are 10 months old are going to pobobly provide different results.
I guess my question is what is the overall average HP and RWT performance for these engines when you factor in all the numbers. I would tend to agree that this is a number that all can agree on.
Re: Stock RWHP numbers??
There are always factory freaks. In general, the more horsepower an engine has, the more the freaks will stand out. There are a small handful of freak LS1's that run 12's from the factory, on stock tires.
You also have to take into account fuel used. Granted, most people interested in putting their car on a dyno are going to use good fuel, but maybe the guy that pulled the 265 had some 87 in the tank and his computer dialed back the timing to compensate.
An old, abused, worn-out torque converter or a slipping clutch can change the numbers too.

Gawd dang!!!! I wish my LS1 I had pulled 12's stock!!! The best my LS1 pulled bone stock 1998 A4 with 2.73 gears was 13.64 @ 104. Not bad. I just cant wait to see what my LT1 pulls. Im thinking 14.0 @ 99. I hope better but I gotta shoot low for now. It just makes me feel better. LOL

Re: Stock RWHP numbers??
Yeah, the ones that run 12's are always M6 cars with 3.42's. I can't remember if they were all SS's or if someone did it in a Z28 (the wider tires make a big difference too!).
Re: Stock RWHP numbers??
FWIW, With nothing more than a drop in K&N and a 180 thermostat I dynoed 287/317 to the wheels. But this is also on a Firehawk with the SLP exhaust option. However on the same day and on the same dyno (dyno day for a local car club) another full bolt on LT1 car only dynoed 255/285. This was also the same session that Compstall got his first dyno numbers.

As you can see I had/have the infamous 5K RPM miss, maybe it would have been able to hit 275, oh well.I think it was a dynojet? It was a single roller if that helps.
