i went to put a new starter in my 93 and it had a 95 starter ... are the 2 interchangable or does that mean at some point the guy before me put a 95-97 motor in it?

All LT1 starters are the same. I'd be surprised if there was a real difference for the LT4.

Be surprised, then. LT4 starters are different (though, interchangeable).

thats what was confusing this one was much smaller.. and the guy i bought the car from didnt know to much about it because he bought it from his cousin. is it possible he has a lt4 in it. i know it was suppose to be stock besides the mods i listed.. and i ran with a 06 GTO and he got me by like 4-5 inches max.. in a about 1/4 mile stretch... how would i tell a lt4 from lt1?

Something must have been wrong with the GTO or that driver.

You can look at the head, intake or block casting numbers to see if they are LT4. Other than that you can take off the pan to see if you have a 4 bolt main.

The size is about the same but they are stronger than an lt1, i literly cracked my lt1 starter in half, no problem w/ the lt4, it cranks stronger and is physically built better. It also makes that sweet high pitched wine when you start your car.

Is the LT4 starter the same gear reduction starter that was put in the vettes? When I needed a new starter a few years ago for my Z I just went to the parts store and asked for a starter for a vette for the same year. It was a gear reduction starter and bolted directly up and worked 10x better then the direct drive hunk of junk that came with the car.

There is no "LT4 block", and being a 4-bolt block does not identify it as an "LT4" block. Used the same 4-bolt main block that was used in the Corvettes and all factory warranty replacement engines, including F-Bodys. Same part number was used on both the 2-bolt and 4-bolt blocks.

Yes, it was specific to the 1996 LT4 Y-body engines.... that's why its called the LT4 starter.
