My neighbor was a little critical of me pulling the engine just for a cam swap...hehe, but he has not wrestled with the confines of a 4th gen F-body either....plus I wanted insanely easy access to the motor. Definitely get that standing over the engine.

dolly construction

I'm planning on building my own engine dolly to rest the engine/trans on to roll out from car. Anybody have suggested dimensions for that and or pictures?

I've read every post I can find and see that many use furniture dollys which are usually about 2' square or a metal dolly.

But if anyone has suggestions on dimensions for homemade I'd appreciate it.

Gotta get trans rebuilt and can hardly wait to drive car again. It's been 11 mos!

Just put my new engine in from the bottom..... will NEVER again go from the top!!

+1 on the ATV jack..... made installation a breeze!! strapped K member to ATV jack and was able to build complete motor from headers to trans.

Is it really that hard to pull it through the top? Does anyone try doing this anymore?

If you use the Happy Hooker, it becomes easier out the top. I think the majority seems to go out the bottom.

I went out the top with the tranny and out the bottom. They both have advantages. I think I prefer the bottom mostly because you can have the headers on.

Re: Some "engine out the bottom" removal pictures

I just did this today. I had already pulled the engine from the top since most things were disconnected by the previous owner. Manifolds removed, etc...

Dropping the K-member by itself took all of about 25 minutes, and this was the first time I'd ever done it. I'm sure with the engine attached it would have taken a bit longer.

Definitely the best way to get the engine out.

I jacked it up, took the front wheels off, set it down on jack stands on the k-member, took out the 6-bolts, jacked it back up, removed jack stands, set the rotors down on some nice all-metal car dollies (with curved surface designed to hold a tire), removed 8 upper strut bolts/nuts, strapped a nylon tow strap to the radiator support, lifted body with a cherry picker, and slid everything out from the passenger side.
Then, I set the body down on a pair of flat furniture dollies with 2 pieces of stacked wood lined up with the frame rails, right about at the factory jacking location on both sides. This way I can still push the car in and out of the garage, like normal, and even slide it side to side, if needed.

Out the bottom is only intimidating until you've done it once. Nowhere near as difficult as one may lead oneself to believe. Much less "hard to get at" stuff when the body is lifted up and over

Mine will be coming out the top when needed. I bought the Happy Hooker engine lift plate awhile back just so I can pull it out the top.

I too purchased a happy hooker, even though I came out the bottom. An excellent leveling tool to lift off and set on the k-member even if not using it to remove out the top
