Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A 5 page thread and NO Happy Ending?

This is currently 1 of 2 of my personal nightmares I am having with my '97 Camaro LT1. Complete rebuild, mild H.P. increase, bullet proofed, new Canton 15242T oil pan, etc, etc, etc. Oil pressure drops 20 to 30 lbs. at high RPM WOP.

The only thing that has helped is running the oil level 1 quart low.
This has not solved the problem. It still does it and pressure still drops 20 lbs. but intermittently.

Someone tell me what the H--- is going on?

Try a new oil filter for an example the extra guard filters filter so good they make your oil pressure decrease. Go with the moroso oil filter, they cause an extremely less drop but filter excellent.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

Same problem here, but only in first and second gear. Drops to ~35 PSI and then quickly climbs back up to ~70 PSI in the higher gears. Stock pan, HV pump, welded pickup, good clearances, etc.... I can stand on it for a mile in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear and the gauge shows 70 PSI all day long. Could the oil be climbing up the back of the block? It doesn't worry me too much, but is disconcerting none the less. I also noticed that running less oil in the pan slightly lessens the drop in pressure, but it is there none the less. I was told to try an aftermarket pan and windage tray, but an earlier post in this thread said that didn't help. If anyone figures this one out, PUHLEEESE let us know.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

I have tried different weight oils and different filter$ (including a Fram Racing HP4) and no diff. It doesn't make any sense since the bypass/relief valve for the oil filter would allow the oil to continue past the filter in that case.

I went with a fram filter and my oil pressure would drop at higher Rpm's a lot and so I switched to a bigger filter I wish I could remember the size but it stopped after I put it in. It holds an extra 1/2 quart. If I remember soon enough I will throw it at you,

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

I used to run FRAM filters, now I run the NAPA gold and M1 10w-30 and the problem is less than it used to be.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

i have the same problem, have the stock windage tray also. ill stomp on it from a stop, the pressure will go right up to 60 psi, as soon as i hit 4500 or so, it drops right down to 40 psi. it will shift into second, and as soon as the rpms go down the oil pressure will go back up again. if i floor it from a 55 or so mph rool, it doesnt go down much at all, will stay at 55 - 60 psi. i have a basically stock 93 firebird. when i got it i put a high pressure pump in it. never drove it with the stock pump to know if the problem was with the stock pump though. had 130k when i got it so i put a new pump in it right away. what exactly is the problem with the stock pan that causes this oil starvation? -dave

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

I have a problem similar to this in my 93 Caprice. Oil pressure drops during hard acceleration (which, in that car, REALLY isn't that hard). If I hold the gas down, wait for the oil pressure to drop, then as it starts to drop, hit the brakes and maintain the speed but keep the gas down, oil pressure comes back up. Here's the key: it won't do this until the oil is quite warmed up AND it won't do this when the crankcase is a quart low (4 quarts). At the proper 5 quart level and higher, it's worse. I have tried a few different viscosities and filters to no avail.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

This is NOT an isolated instance. I am going to call Canton for the 3rd time. There are lots of theories as to why THIS HAPPENS and some bandaid fixes but SOMEONE SOMEWHERE must have an answer!

This is the Answer!

It may be the rate of acceleration that will make the oil climb the back of your pan right past the pickup. Miloden or Moroso sells a plate that you bolt between the pump and block and then trim to fit your pan. Thats what I have on my car with the stock pan.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

This NIGHTMARE IS OVER!!! Choose ONE of the following changes that cured my reverse oil pressure nightmare-

A) Replaced Canton oil pan and pickup with stock OEM LT1
B) Replaced stock Melling oil pump #155 with same (both w/lime green sprgs)
C) Replaced stock roller lifters w/ Comp Cam Pro Mag Hyd Roller Lifters (#875)
D) Replace the Comp Cam Pro Mag self-aligning roller rockers w/same but non self aligning and guide plates (found one w/hammered lip)
E) All of the above

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S OVER!!! However, the answer is E. Yes, it is true. Every one of the above items was changed all at once. Sooooo I will never know what caused this phenomenon and I hope to never see it again.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

Does the Canton pan really suck that bad? I was considering buying it to cure this very same problem, but apparantly it's not all that great of a pan. I'll probably at least get a windage tray. Anyways, I just run it about 3/4 of a quart low and the pressure doesn't drop at all.

Re: Reverse Oil Pressure???

I have not read all of this but for what it is worth, I changed oil filters and fixed most of my problem with loss of Oil Pressure on hard accelaration.
