Visual aid for those requiring it.... .

MacPherson strut suspension

In the "strut" type suspension, the structure of the front suspension is a "3-link" mechanism. Since the elements of a triangle can not move, the "shock" becomes a "strut", serving as a sliding link, allowing the structure to move. This is a very "cheap" suspension to build, and is susceptible to severe, undesired changes in camber.

Unequal A-arm suspension

In an A-arm type suspension, the structure is a "4-link" mechanism. This has the ability to "move" without any sliding link. The spring and shock are just sort of "tacked on", as independant components, or in a "coil-over" form. More expensive to build, and provides superior camber control.

Stock from bilstein, I think they have HD and Sport, Sport being the firmest. You can also get specially valved Bilsteins. I got a set from TByrne that was valved by SLP, the same as the optional SS suspension. I think they were $349 for the set.

BTW, the front coilovers are a b@#%h to change, as the springs are under a lot of tension. I went to autozone to get a spring compressor, and my shop no longer lends them out, after an employee used one wrong, and sent a spring through the side wall of the shop. I ended up paying a shop $100 to do it on their monster HD spring compressor.
