Putting a 100 shot nitrous kit on my stock 93 z28
Re: Putting a 100 shot nitrous kit on my stock 93 z28
The issue is really detonation. Hypereutectic pistons are "brittle". Detonation will break a ring land, or worse. Tune it correctly, with regard to A/F ratio and spark timing, using RELIABLE components, and the problem can be avoided. I bought my 94 brand new, while still stock added an NOS 125-shot dry kit, ran it for 4 years with no problems. System tuning requires a frequent, careful inspection of the spark plugs to insure the system is not on the edge of detonation. Always safer to set it up a bit on the fat side.
Obviously, a "tired" engine isn't going to be happy carrying the extra load of a nitrous system, so high mileage is a consideration.

Things you need to consider:
- the stock spec spark plugs are extended nose. The long ground straps turn in to glow plugs and cause detonation, or just burn away. They should be replaced with a one step colder, standard-reach plug.. Generally, avoid platinum plugs.
- There's a good summary of nitrous accessories "stickied" on the NOS Tech forum:
- Not all the things listed are required for a 100-shot. The essentials are:
- fuel pressure safety switch - shuts system down with low fuel pressure
- WOT switch - only allows activation of system at WOT (kit usually includes this)
- window switch - prevents activating nitrous at low RPM, and cuts nitrous before stock rev limiter
- timing retard box - pulls a few degrees of timing when you spray.
- if bottle is inside car (almost always the case with our hatchbacks), a relief valve/fitting and blowdown tube are mandatory
- Always good to have:
- nitrous pressure gauge
- fuel pressure gauge
- bottle heater
- purge kit
- Not sure about the capability of the stock fuel pump to supply the extra fuel. My dry kit had an inline booster pump, but that was because the dry kit required very high fuel pressure. A wet kit can run on stock pressure, or you can add a small tank/pump setup for the extra fuel required by the nitrous.
