Engine stalling when put into gear

I just acquired a 95 z28, when I go to put the car into r or d the car stalls hard, currently pulling a code 83 an 84. I know code 83 is the torque converter solenoid, so I replaced it but still having the same issue. If I lift the back tires off the ground I can get it into gear an run but i have little to no penal response. Any help would be great!?

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

According to Shoebox’s site (http://shbox.com/1/Dtcs.htm), the specific descriptions for those codes on your car are:

84: 3-2 Control Solenoid Circuit
85: Transmission TCC stuck on

TCC stuck on would definitely give the stalling issue you’re describing, but neither code explains no response from the pedal. It’s odd that you wouldn’t get another code for that.

Have you tested for fuel pressure?

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

According to your first post, you replaced the TCC solenoid, because you had the wrong code description.

DTC 84 indicates "Automatic Transmission 3-2 Control Solenoid Circuit". That's right out of the factory service manual - free download here - courtesy of GaryDoug:

See page 6E3-A-152

DTC 85 is "Transmission TCC Stuck "On" ".

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

Not sure how to make this any clearer.

DTC 83 is for “TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Fault”. Replace TCC solenoid, or look for wiring fault.

DTC 84 is for the “3-2 Control Solenoid Circuit”. Replace 3-2 solenoid, or look for wiring fault.

You can’t cure DTC 84 by replacing the TCC solenoid. Do you still have DTC 84?

On the other hand, DTC 85 is for the “TCC stuck ‘on’ “. Could be the TCC solenoid mechanically jammed, or circuit shorted to ground. But if the circuit was shorted, you would likely have DTC 83, which is not the code you said you had.

How did you “know”. DTC 84 “is for the torque converter solenoid”? Or was it a typo when you said DTC 84?

Pretty sure JakRobb was also pointing out the same inconsistency.

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

Okay my bad i typed the wrong codes in, i had code 83 -Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit problem and 84 - Output Driver Module (odm) Fault. Skip Shift Circuit. That is what my code reader read when i scanned it.

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

At this point, you might want to download the free factory service manual. That's not the correct description of DTC 84. Two of us have told you the correct description. Skip Shift only applies to manual trans.

Re: Engine stalling when put into gear

I am just going off what my scanner read and the description it gave me for each code, even off what you have gave me code 84 i do not think should lock up the transmission under a load on the back tires. And i have already replaced the tcc solenoid for code 83, Only other thing i can think of is the actual torque converter is locked up. But that is why i came here to get a second opinion, because i can not find anything online about this.
