Re: OPTISPARK replacement...What will you get next time: Delteq, MSD, GM....

I put in a new gm opti (converted to a vented one) and a delteq while the motor was apart. It runs superb. The delteq is a great design IMO. The instructions are second to none and help me diagnose a wiring problem I would not have been able to find on my own. The system has it own diagnostics.

One question I had for delteq was if their system is compatible with the smart spark timing computer. The smart spark instructions say it is compatible with the Ford multicoil systems. Delteq didn't know anything about the smart spark, like most people on this board. I think the company who made it went out of business.

Don't forget to change out the timing chain also, the stocker is junk. Ask me how I know.

I have had my Delteq for a couple years. Very happy with this set-up and you cann't even see it. It is mounted to the bottom of the fan shroud.

Beleive it on not, my delteq was the first production unit sold.

I have been curious if mounting the coils dow there exposes them to water in rainy conditions. It would seem that they would constantly be getting splashed. Obviously this is not an issue, but just having high voltage parts exposed to water like that seems risky.

I run my 8 LS1 coils on brackets right behind the bottom of the radiator, and street driving in a downpour has not proven them to be a problem. The car doesn't get driven in the rain much any more, but it has been a few times since that picture was taken more than 5 years ago.

I paid about $1600 about 6 or 7 years ago. I have done the job twice since then myself.

I am getting the missing hi res signal again and the car is starting to backfire occasionally. I ordered an MSD last night. It is not supposed to ship to me until around 7/9. I'll post my opinion of the install of this unit when done.

The car has 307,000 miles on it so it won't take me long to give an opinion on its longevity.

I just found out from Eric at Dynaspark The diagnostics on my opti are fine. He said the cap and rotor are clean. Optical sensor does not skip a beat. The opti is out of warranty and he could have charged me for new stuff but did not. I was actually kinda surprised. But now I still have to find out where my miss/popping is coming from.

Do you have any more pics of your set up?

Well it looks like I will go the Delteq way.

I bought the 4 coils and the ICM for $25.00 shipped which is a steal as long as they work right.

The real funniy thing is now my 5.5K stutter seems to be less noticable. I removed my lean tune in favor of a slightly richer tune, plus it may have been bad gas. All this crap started again when I filled up with BP gas. I was getting a lot of knock retard too.

Now I filled up with some Shell and hammered on it with no apparent sign of stutter.

That was the passenger side.... not a lot of difference on the drivers side:

And to be very clear.... my ignition system uses 8 LS1-style coils, but it is not an LTCC. Its a MoTeC M48Pro engine management system, fed by the Opti optical sensor, and using the MoTeC IEX 8-channel ignition driver.

Well when I start getting serious about mods its going to be a FAST system with the intake drilled to eliminate the opti all together

Re: OPTISPARK replacement...What will you get next time: Delteq, MSD, GM....

I have yet to figure out why so many people rage on the Optispark design. I still have the original in my car with zero problems. It seems whenever a person whines that theirs failed about a line or two later they say something like "I guess I should have covered it before I power sprayed the engine" and then they complain about how faulty of a design it is. I think people tend to forget about the ignitions just shortly before the Opti that had to be replaced every 30-50k miles. IMO if you use a little bit of common sense and take good care of the Opti, it should last a long time.

I used to think that way but it's all luck of the draw. My stocker lasted 100kish but all the ones after that were junk and would misfire when trying to pull up in the range of aftermarket cams.

With that particular location were you able to use stock length wires? Or are those custom cut?

I do believe you can mag pickup with the delteq system, when you have a fast ecu. Check with the delteq guys to make sure.

Custom.

With an aftermarket ECU, you can eliminate the Opti and rely on a crank position signal, but you lose the ability to run sequential injection, and you are limited to the "waste spark" system that the Delteq uses.
