Open Header LT1

Putting Hooker Long Tubes on my car, how loud is this thing going to be? I have heard open header LS1s and they didnt seem that bad, like if you stayed off it you wouldnt atract much atention. But I'm hearing from a lot of my friends who have had both LT1/LS1s, that the LT1s are a good bit louder open header. I dont need to go on a road trip but a good 10 miles or so to get the y built.

Re: Open Header LT1

Are you asking if the sound level will be so bad that you can't sit in the car for 20 minutes? You should be able to stand it. Or will it be enough to attract the attention of the cops if you drive it like that to the shop? It will be loud enough to get their attention. My neighbors told me when I start my car, their windows rattle. I know the interior of the car will rattle like hell, and my chest throbs with any sort of throttle.

Fred,
I think our set ups are a tad different, dont think my bolt on Lt1 will be rattling any windows any time soon

Killwhitey,

Its only gonna be open header for a day or two, just get it home and then take it to get a Y pipe built.

I drove my 383 stoker I had back in 1998 from College Station to Waco open header to get the y-pipe made. About 100 miles. Was very LOUD! Gave me a headache.

Re: Open Header LT1

I ran mine open header... Waiting until I could get the chance to go to an exhaust shop to get everything else welded up.

Lets just say it like this... Within 2 days, the CHP was at my house 3 times, a city unit went by my house once, and I got pulled over driving to work. Then I went to the exhaust shop one morning right after I got off work so I wouldn't be getting any more home visits.

It will sound awesome though. It will sound like you're suddenly driving a NASCAR, no kidding. You'll really enjoy the WOT runs.

Open headers will be extremely loud. If you have ever been near a running stock car, it is kind of like that.

You'll be suprised how loud yours is. My engine is really not all that wild... the cam's no bigger than a 306.

Don't drive it for too long. The O2 sensors in the open collectors are going to be seeing the air that mixes in with the exhaust gasses. It will make the engine run very rich.

Re: Open Header LT1

on the 02 sensor note i had problems after the new engine on open headers and thought my o2s where bad because they werent working right, turned out just to be the LT's causing it with open collectors. anyways i was amazed at the sound of the open headers for a little while, then i was praying for my y-pipe to come in, because it was crazy loud! like we finally got it running at 2am and my buddy was like theres no way we can sneak this outta town. we did it anyways but even at low idle limping it out of town it was so loud! after i got all the exhuast hooked back up i was a little dissapointed because i got so used to that load as hell noise. now im thinking about a cut out. haha

If one were to put a cutout on each side of the y-pipe, should this provide sufficient distance away from the o2 sensor while still allowing an open exhaust??

I talked to the guy building my Y pipe, he said as long as you dont hitto much traffic you should be ok. But yeah, ist going to be very loud, I guess I'll have to see, I really dont plan to have it open very long.

I loved that first start up to see for exhaust leaks....

That and the curing smell of ceramic coatings...
